JOHNSONBURG - Louis L. Gerhart, 87, of Folino Drive, Wilcox, died Sunday (April 7, 2013) at Elk Regional Health Center, St. Marys, after a lengthy illness.

He was born Dec. 18, 1925, in Kane, the son of Louis L. and Sarah Heasley Gerhart Sr. He married Elizabeth J. "Betty" Raubenstrauch on Jan. 28, 1950. He was born and raised in Kane, he lived in Johnsonburg from 1950 to 1954, the DuBois area from 195-1997 and has been a Wilcox resident since 1997.
He served in the U.S. Navy as Gunners Mater 3rd Class during World War II from 1944 to 1946, including the liberation of the Philippines. He worked at Diamond Casting of Johnsonburg from 1946 to 1952 and was the owner/operator of the Rhododendron Bar & Grill of Sykesville from 1968 to 1976 and worked as a truck driver with Hall Motor Transit for 35 years.
He was Protestant by faith, a member and past commander of the Sykesville American Legion, member of the DuBois VFW, life member of the Disabled American Veterans and the Wilcox Sportsmen's.
He is survived by his wife; three brothers, Robert Gerhart of Kane, Francis "Manny" Gerhart of Kane and John Gerhart in California; three sisters, Pearl "Sissy" Benson, Jane Read and Gloria Swanson, all of Kane; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Martha Kwiatowski; and three brothers, Milton, Thomas and Frank Gerhart.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday and 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Ubel Funeral Home, Johnsonburg. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with the Rev. David Wilson officiating. Military honors will be accorded by the Johnsonburg/Wilcox Serviceman's Detail. Military members are asked to assemble at the funeral home at 10:45 a.m. Wednesday. Interment will be in Lakelawn Memorial Park, Reynoldsville.
