RIDGWAY - Marigold S. Nelson, 68, of 102 Center St., Ridgway, passed away Sunday (June 2, 2013) at home surrounded by her loving family.
She was born March 10, 1945, in Concord, N.H., the daughter of Harry and Shirley Woodworth Brown. On July 1, 1967, she married John Nelson, who survives.
Mrs. Nelson was director/owner of Nelson Behavioral Center Inc. in Ridgway since Janaury 1986; court-appointed Elk County highway safety program coordinator since 1987; certified Alcohol Highway Safety Program instructor in Pennsylvania since May 1986; and certified addiction counselor diplomate in Pennsylvania since November 1988.
She earned her doctorate of philosophy from Columbia State University in Louisiana in April 1998; a doctorate of addiction therapy from International Graduate Institute in December 2004 and a doctorate of child and family therapy from International Graduate Institute in December 2004. She graduated Cum Laude from the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford and from the LaSalle University masters degree program.
Her memberships included the DUI Association, Business and Professional Women, National Federation of Independent Businesses, Ridgway and St. Marys Area Chamber of Commerce, and The American Mental Health Counselors Association.
She was a member of the First Lutheran Church and enjoyed all types of crafts.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son, Dwayne Nelson of Ridgway; a granddaughter, Breanna Nelson of Brookville; a brother, Leslie (Laura) Brown of Troy, Vt.; and two sisters, Marjorie Baker of Ridgway and Merry Lee (John) Ford of Kane.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Joel Nelson; and two brothers, Lane and Larry Brown.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Meehan-Shilk Funeral Home, where funeral and committal services will be held at 9 a.m. Thursday. Officiating will be the Rev. Erik Hart, pastor of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Oakmont Cemetery.
