EMPORIUM - Peter F. Grovanz Jr., 96, of 3764 Rich Valley Road, Emporium, died at Penn Highlands DuBois on Tuesday morning (Feb. 2, 2016).

He was born Oct. 14, 1919, in Emporium, a son of the late Peter and Rose DeMoro Grovanz Sr. On Nov. 25, 1962, in Emporium, he married the late Mary Ellen Griffith Grovanz.
Mr. Grovanz served with the U.S. Army during War War II, from Feb. 5, 1941 to Oct. 29, 1945. He served in the the European African middle eastern campaigns in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. He was wounded in France on Dec. 24, 1944 and returned to action to fight in four more countries. He was awarded a Purple Heart medal on Jan. 7, 1945, American Campaign medal with five bronze stars.
Peter retired from Louis and Hockenberry, where he had worked for many years. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoying hunting, fishing and trapping. Pete also enjoyed gardening and farming and his animals.
Surviving are a son, Peter (Lori) Grovanz of Emporium; three grandsons, Thomas, Keith and Justin Grovanz; three great-grandchildren, Katherine, Oscar and Diesel; and two sisters, Rose Gentile of Ruselton and Josephine Haigh of Ashtabula, Ohio.
He was preceded in death by his parents and wife; a daughter, Ann Darlene Grovanz; five sisters, Jennie Yore, Katie Carnovale, Lottye Carlson, Theresa Young, Christine Grovanz and Theresa Young; and three brothers, James, Ralph and Joseph Grovanz
Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Friday at the Barnett Funeral Home, 207 E. 4th St., Emporium, followed by a funeral service with the Rev. Joseph Short, pastor of the First United Methodist Church, officiating. A military service will be accorded by the Cameron County Memorial Detail. Burial will be in Rich Valley Cemetery, Emporium.
