MILLPORT - Roger R. Carpenter, 82, of Millport, passed away on Monday (March 17, 2014) in Cole Memorial Hospital, Coudersport, after a short illness.
Born March 11, 1932, at home in Dallas City, Pa., he was a son of Floyd B. and Bernice Finch Carpenter. On Sept. 10, 1960, in Bradford, he married Barbara A. Shepard, who survives.
He was a graduate of Bradford High School, Class of 1951. Mr. Carpenter was a U.S. Army veteran having served from 1952 to 1954 during the Korean War.
Roger worked in local oil fields for the former Flanigan Brothers in Bradford and was also employed at West Brothers in Millport where he retired in the early 1990s.
He was a member of the Church of the Nazarene in Bradford. He was a member of Sharon Lodge #598 F&AM in Shinglehouse, where he was very active with the fish fry fundraisers. He was a former member of the Coudersport Consistory, a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge in Rew and a member of the Eldred American Legion Post 887.
Roger, along with his wife, enjoyed camping, belonging to the P.A.L.S. Camping Club and Stargazers Camping Club. He enjoyed spending two months in Florida during the winter.
Surviving besides his wife are two grandchildren, Jennifer and James; seven great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law; several nieces and nephews; and several cousins, including Lois Turpel.
In addition to his parents, Roger was predeceased by a daughter, Debra Karen Jarrell; and four brothers.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Virgil L. Howard Funeral Home, 118 S. Union St., Shinglehouse, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday with the Rev. Christine A. Groeger, associate pastor of the First United Methodist Church, Emporium, officiating. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Shinglehouse.
Members of Sharon Lodge #598 F&AM will conduct memorial services at 8:30 p.m. today in the funeral home. Members of the Potter County Honor Guard and Eldred American Legion Post 887 will accord military honors on Thursday.
