ELDRED - Roger G. Fitzsimmons, passed away peacefully on Saturday (July 2, 2016) at Citrus Memorial Hospital in Invernes, Fla.
The Guest Book is expired.
Mr. Fitzsimmons was born on Feb 21, 1939, in Corsica, a son of Clarence "Bob" and Mary Aiken Fitzsimmons. They moved to Eldred in 1944.
He was a graduate from Eldred High School in 1957 and Bloomsburg State College in 1961 with the honor of being selected for "Who's Who" in American Colleges and Universities that year. He then worked for the Singer Co. in California in government contract accounting before serving in the U.S. Navy from 1964-1968. Upon discharge, he worked for two Fortune 500 companies in sales capacities, including Kimberly Clark and Reynolds Metals.
In 1979, he purchased Virginia Equipment Co., Roanoke, Va., and operated it for two years. After selling the company, he worked for Associated Packaging of Nashville, Tenn. In 1985, he worked for Packaging Consultants of Minneapolis, Minn., and by 1988 he and partners purchased that business and operated it successfully until selling it to the Unisource Division of Alco Standard in 1995. Alco divided into two separate companies two years later and the Unisource Co. was later purchased by Georgia Pacific.
Roger retired from Georgia Pacific in 2001 and spent the next year traveling the country in an RV. He and his wife, Shirley, lived in a Panama City suburb for three years before moving to the Villages in 2005.
His interests were golf, fishing, and traveling. He visited every state except Alaska which was on his bucket list and unfortunately never happened. He had many friends from Minnesota, Panama City and The Villages.
He was predeceased by his wife in 2011. He is survived by his brother, Thomas (Sherry) Fitzsimmons; two nephews, Troy Fitzsimmons and Shawn (Trisha) Fitzsimmons; one niece, Kelli Luce; three great-nieces, Jennifer Fitzsimmons Sisson, Brandi (Cody Mason) Coscia and Jamie Gariepy; and nephews.
