Verna M. Howell, 88, of 3461 Rt. 646, Gifford, formerly of Raleigh, N.C., passed away Monday (July 29, 2013) at the Bradford Regional Medical Center.

Born March 29, 1925, in Waukesha, Wisc., she was a daughter of the late Paul and Estelle Link Matz.
On June 4, 1941, in San Francisco, Calif., she married William P. Howell, who died Dec. 27, 1971.
Mrs. Howell was a graduate of Waukesha High School, and attended Beauty School. She resided in North Carolina most of her life, where she worked for the State of North Carolina in the motor vehicle department as a clerk-typist for 38 years.
She was a former member of the Wesminister Presbyterian Church in Raleigh, and attended the Hilltop Baptist Church in Gifford.
Surviving are seven nieces and nephews, Erelyn (Calvin) Abbott of Gifford, Thomas (JoEllen) Eck of Hazel Hurst, Donald (Jonilyn) Eck of Warren, Patty (Doug) Shick of Gifford, William (Kelly) Eck of Bradford, James (Beth) Eck of Bradford, and Christopher (Regina) Eck of Rew; and several grand- and great-grand nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Gwendolyn Eck.
Family will be receiving friends on Thursday at the Hilltop Baptist Church from 1 to 2 p.m., at which time funeral and committal services will be held with the Rev. Max Simms, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in McKean Memorial Park. Arrangements are under the direction of the Hollenbeck-Cahill Funeral Homes Inc.
