William Joseph "Speed" McCarthy, 91, formerly of Bradford, passed away Saturday (Feb. 16, 2013) in Phoenix, Ariz.

Born and raised in Bradford, he was a son of the late Charles and Elizabeth McCarthy.
Mr. McCarthy was a 1940 graduate of Bradford High School and served with the U.S. Army in Europe during World War II.
After the war, he returned to Bradford and worked for many years as an electrician for the Pennsylvania Electric Co. In 1959, Mr. McCarthy and his family moved to Phoenix, where he worked for Arizona Public Service as an electrician until his retirement in 1982.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, Jean Colligan McCarthy; three daughters, Coleen (Paul) Graf of Middletown, R.I., Joan (Tim) Donnelly of Mission Viejo, Calif., and Moira McCarthy of Phoenix; six grandchildren, William Graf of Medford, Mass., Erin (Ryan) Palkoner of San Diego, Calif., Brian Graf of Middletown and Catherine, Sean and Cole Donnelly, all of Mission Viejo; and one great-grandson, Logan Palkoner. He is also survived by his sister, Mary Rae of Bradford, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and five brothers, Charles, Kenneth, Jake, Thomas and Russell McCarthy.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Feb. 20 in St. Theresa Roman Catholic Church in Phoenix, where he was a member for 54 years. Friends are invited to attend a Mass of Remembrance at 4:30 p.m. Saturday in St. Francis of Assisi Roman Catholic Church with the Rev. Stephen Collins, pastor, as celebrant. Interment will be in St. Bernard Cemetery.
