PARKERSBURG, W.Va. - Charles Robert Whelan, 57, of Parkersburg, was peacefully taken home Sunday (March 25, 2012) at UPMC Montefiore Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pa.
He was born in Bradford, Pa., on June 29, 1954, a son of the late Charles and Katherine Schemerhorn Whelan.
Charlie was an activist in his community who had many passions in his life such as running, writing poetry, walking his dogs, Storm and Lily, in City Park, where he cherished his park friends. Most importantly, he dedicated himself to helping others. One of Charlie's greatest joys was playing Santa to help make Christmas a magical time for children in the Parkersburg area.
He is survived by his life partner, Laura Ann Spenia of Parkersburg; one daughter, Vikki (Rick) Eshbaugh of Bradford; three grandchildren, Kyle, Lauren and Leah Eshbaugh; one brother, Gary Whelan from Indiana; one nephew, Gary "Bubba" Whelan from Indiana; and one niece, Heather Walker of Bradford.
A memorial service will be held 7 p.m. Monday at the Baptist Temple on Park Avenue and 19th Street in Parkersburg with the Rev. Larry Dale officiating. Friends may gather from 5 to 7 p.m. at the church.
