James E. "Bim" Colligan, 85, a beloved husband, father, and grandfather, of 235 Bolivar Drive, passed away Saturday (Dec. 29, 2012) surrounded by his loving family at Bradford Regional Medical Center.
Born Dec. 26, 1927, in Erie, he was a son of the late Francis H. and Frances M. Fleming Colligan. On Nov. 18, 1950, in St. Bernard Church, he married Bette J. Olson Colligan, who survives.
Mr. Colligan was a 1946 graduate of Bradford High School, where he enjoyed playing sports, especially basketball. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served as a paratrooper prior to his honorable discharge.
He worked as a real estate broker for Francis H. Colligan Agency, a company started by his father in the mid-40's. At the time of his death, he was a partner with his son, Jim, who owns Colligan Real Estate.
He was a member of St. Bernard Church, Pine Acres Golf Club, the Bradford Club, the Exchange Club, American Legion, Bradford Moose Lodge, and past exulted ruler of the Elks Club. He enjoyed horse racing and at one time owned horses "Tiffany Erin" and "Meadowprize."
Surviving, in addition to his wife Bette of 62 years, is one daughter, Karin M. Colligan of Jamestown, N.Y.; three sons, James P. Colligan of Bradford, Timothy F. Colligan of Harrisonburg, Va., and Daniel J. (Jennifer) Colligan of Nashville, Tenn.; four grandchildren, Erin Colligan Lee, Benjamin Colligan, Joshua Shaw and Brett Shaw; two great-grandchildren, Jackson Shaw and Aiden Shaw; one brother, Francis "Frank" Colligan of Bradford; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Joan Merriman and Marjorie Slocum; and two brothers, Tom Colligan and John "Jack" Colligan.
Family will be receiving friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Hollenbeck-Cahill Funeral Homes Inc., South Avenue. Friends are also invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. Wednesday in St. Bernard Church with the Rev. Raymond Gramata, pastor, as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Bernard Cemetery.
