Mary Hvizdzak, 101, of 561 High St., Bradford, passed away peacefully on Friday (Sept. 6, 2013) at The Pavilion at BRMC.

Born Aug. 31, 1912, in Hutchins, she was a daughter of the late Paul and Mary Yaros Platko Sr. On Oct. 31, 1931, in St. Michael Greek Catholic Church in Sheffield, she married Stephen Hvizdzak Sr., who died on Sept. 15, 1979.
She attended school in Custer City. She was a stay at home mom who devoted all her time to not only the care and welfare of her children but also any family members in need of help. Even when hungry transients would knock on the back porch door, she would tell them to find a shady spot on the front stone wall while she prepared their meal. She was a member of St. Bernard Church.
Surviving is one daughter, Mrs. Mary (the late Thomas) Murphy of Custer City; one son, Paul (Connie) Hvizdzak of Randolph; two daughter-in-laws, Jean Hvizdzak of Bradford Rose Marie Hvizdzak of Bradford; four sisters, Helen Juliano of Warren, Elizabeth Kavanaugh of Buffalo, N.Y., Rose Boser, of South Bend, Ind., and Pauline Mackey of Custer City; one brother, Steve Platko of Custer City; 11 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband; two sons, Peter J. Hvizdzak and Stephen Hvizdzak Jr.; two brothers, John Platko and Paul Platko; and three sisters, Ann Fetyko, Susan Salamon and Margaret Wirtz.
At the family's request, there will be no visitation. Friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial at noon Wednesday in St. Bernard Church with the Rev. Raymond Gramata, pastor, as celebrant. Committal services and burial will follow in St. Bernard Cemetery.
