Donald H. Barrett

Donald H. Barrett 1928 - 2008 SHELBURNE Donald H. Barrett, formerly of Hinsdale, and Winchester, N.H., died Tuesday morning, Dec. 23rd, at his daughter's home in Shelburne, Vt., surrounded by many family members. Donald was determined to live his life to the fullest right up to the end. Donald felt so blessed to be with his family. Immediately after his diagnosis of pancreatic cancer in October 2007 he chose to come to the Burlington area so that he could enjoy every possible moment with them. He was born in Hinsdale, N.H., on June 1, 1928, son of Marvin and Hazel Hudson Barrett. Donald was one of five children. He grew up on their family farm in Hinsdale. He always had a wonderful story to tell about his childhood farming to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He graduated from High School in 1946 and continued his education until he had his equivalent to a Bachelor's Degree in accounting. Donald was very much respected as a Certified Public Accountant for over 40 years. Donald worked for many years for Bob Boucher and Marrow before opening his own accounting firm in Brattleboro. Mr. Barrett also owned and solely operated his own Locksmith business. He was a member of the Association of Locksmiths for many years. Donald retired from Pieciak and Company, P.C. in 1996. Mr. Barrett lived in Hinsdale for 52 years before moving to West Swanzey and then to Winchester in 1992. He was also grateful for being able to spend many winters in Zephyrhills, Fla., after his retirement. He was a past President and Vice-President of the Vermont Association of Public Accountants, a member of the New Hampshire Association of Public Accountants and associate member of the Massachusetts Association of Public Accountants. Mr. Barrett also served on the Board of Directors for the Vermont Association of Public Accountants, and was a former State Director of the National Society of Public Accountants. Mr. Barratt taught seminars in Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, New York, Ohio and Washington DC. He was proud of his profession and enjoyed learning, teaching and staying up to date on all the latest changes in the accounting field. Many of his colleagues would look to him for guidance. Donald, dad or grandpa as his family knew him was a very gifted musician and entertainer. He enjoyed entertaining his family and friends playing his guitar and singing, and playing his harmonica. He also played the piano when he was younger; never having any lessons he taught himself how to play all of these instruments through sound and practice. He enjoyed singing and playing all kinds of music but especially gospel and old country music. Donald was very active in the senior center where he lived in Winchester N.H. He organized many popular shows, set up coffee hours, bingo, and even performed a few shows of his own with his friend Don. He and Don, also known as the "Ding Bats" always drew a crowd for their shows. Donald was an avid Fisherman and talked about getting down to the lake next spring with his Brother, Albert to fish. Earlier in his life he enjoyed hunting. Grandpa especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He loved to tell jokes, sing, and tell stories of the "good old days" which we will never forget. Donald was predeceased by his first wife of 30 years, Barbara Johnson Barrett in 1976, his only son, Ernest Marvin Barrett in 1985, his first great-grandchild, Allen Lourio Vincelette in 1986, and his Brother Winston Barrett in 2007. Mr. Barrett leaves his devoted daughter, Donna Martel of Shelburne, Vt., and her six children and their families, and his son's wife, Dixie Louanne Barrett Brookes and her three children and their families. He also leaves his wife Arlene Barrett of Winchester, N.H., and her four children and their families, his older sisters Evelyn Wellwood of Vernon, Vt., Ethelyn Fales Stephens of Hinsdale, N.H., and his younger brother Albert Barrett of Bradenton, Fla. Donald also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and friends. The family of Donald would like to thank all of the wonderful healthcare providers at the Vermont Cancer Center at Fletcher Allen Health Care. Donald received excellent care from everyone, but he especially admired his nurse Jean and his Physicians Dr. Stephen Ades and Dr. Ruth Heimann. We were also blessed to have the help of the Chittenden County VNA and then the Hospice team with Dr. Zail Berry and nurse Claire. Donald wanted to be at home surrounded by his family and they could have never done this without help, so a special thank you to all who came to help them during this very difficult time. FUNERAL NOTICE: Private services for Mr. Barrett will be held at the family's convenience. FLETCHER FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION SERVICES in Keene, NH, is in charge of the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made in Mr. Donald H.
