1951 - 2014 BRATTLEBORO Gail G. Christmas, 62, of Melrose Street, a lifelong resident of Brattleboro, died Saturday morning, March 8, 2014, at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital, following a brief battle with pancreatic cancer. Gail was born in Brattleboro on April 30, 1951, the daughter of Frank and Nancy Juscen Goldsmith. She attended Brattleboro public schools, and was a graduate of Brattleboro Union High School, class of 1969. She went on to attend Castleton State College where she earned her B.A. degree in Education in 1973. Gail had taught at Bellows Falls Union High School, where she retired from in June 2013. Previously, she taught at the Kurn Hattin School and served as a special education teacher at Oak Grove School in Brattleboro. She also worked as a para professional at Academy School in West Brattleboro. Her first teaching assignment was at the Putney School. Gail was the proud recipient of the University of Vermont Teacher of the Year Award for Windham Northeast Supervisory Union, presented to her in 2010. She was well respected by her fellow colleagues and admired and loved by her many students. A devout Catholic, she was a lifelong communicant of St. Michael's Roman Catholic Church where, for several years, she served as a youth coordinator with the parish's religious education committee. She also volunteered in the church's rectory under former pastor Basil Nichols. At Brattleboro Union High School, she was instrumental with the establishment of the Helen Ingram Scholarship Award and was active with the BUHS Booster Club. Gail was an avid reader and devoted homemaker, whose life centered around her family. Throughout the past few years, with her sister Tina, she was a dedicated caregiver to her elderly mother. She especially enjoyed following her grandchildren's sports and after school activities. She was known for her spirit of friendship and generosity, always willing to help anyone in need. On February 16, 1974, at St. Michael's Catholic Church, she was married to William "Bill" Christmas. Besides her devoted husband of 40 years, she leaves a son, Seth Christmas of Brattleboro; two daughters, Courtney Millerick and her husband, Chris, of Vernon, and Whitney Christmas of Boston, Mass.; her mother, of Brattleboro; two grandchildren, Devin and Tyler Millerick; a sister, Tina Squires of Guilford, and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her father. FUNERAL NOTICE: The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 11 a.m. at St. Michael's Catholic Church with Rev. James Dodson, pastor, celebrant. A reception will follow the Mass to be held at the Elks Home on Putney Road.
