Martha Ann Miller

1940 - 2014 BRATTLEBORO Martha Ann Miller, 73, passed away peacefully on Jan. 30, 2014, at Gifford Medical Center in Randolph, after a short battle with cancer. She was born in Burlington, on Sept. 7, 1940, to Ellwyn E. and Beverley Hubbard Miller. Martha grew up in Northfield, Mass., and Putney. She graduated from Northfield School for Girls in 1958. After high school, she attended the University of Vermont and then Windham College where she earned a Teaching Certificate in 1962. Martha pursued graduate coursework at the University of Vermont in Childhood Education. In the 1960's, Martha taught art and music in local schools. A very intelligent and talented woman in many domains, poetry and short story writing, sewing, and singing, Martha was also an entrepreneur. In the early 1970's, she worked as an independent seamstress and created KatieDid, Inc. a support system for battered women. In the early 1990's, she created, owned and ran ElderWise, Inc., an in-home care-giving service. During that 15 year period, Martha developed a comprehensive collection of courses to develop in-home certified caregivers. In its day, ElderWise Inc. employed 44 caregivers and additionally trained many more to become independent, professional caregivers. Her caregiving course is the only comprehensive training program for certification in Vermont. Besides her work as founder and director of ElderWise, Inc., she produced several television shows, including "Getting Older and Wiser," on BCTV in Brattleboro and Middlebury. She also wrote a column, Close to Home, for the Brattleboro Reformer and Vernon Newspaper. Well-known for her beautiful soprano voice, Martha sang with different groups and churches throughout her life. A former member of the Burlington Oratorio Society, she later joined the Church of Latter Day Saints in South Royalton where she acted as choir director before committing herself to the church's genealogy research. Martha is survived by three daughters and one son, Katherine Palles of Charleston, S.C., Emily Wolff of Paris, France, Beverly Downen of Portland, Oreg., and Michael Flores of Berkeley, Calif.; her four brothers, Richard Miller, E. Reed Miller, David Miller and John Miller, all of Vermont; five grandchildren, Bradley, Dorian, Anya-Raven, Zoe and Zackary, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives. Martha was predeceased by her parents, Ellwyn and Beverley Miller, and her brother, Mark Arms Miller. FUNERAL NOTICE: A memorial service will be held Monday, Feb. 3, at 4 p.m. at her church, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints at 113 LDS Lane South Royalton, VT 05068. Burial will follow in the spring at the Miller family plot at the Dummerston Center Cemetery, Dummerston. Details to be announced.
