1917 - 2015 WEST BRATTLEBORO Arleen Norma Winchester, 97, of Ames Hill Road, died peacefully early Monday morning, July 27, 2015 in the comfort of her home with her family at her side. Mrs. Winchester was born in Fairlee, VT on August 21, 1917, the daughter of Ami and Jennie (Holtham) George. She was raised and educated in Fairlee and was a graduate of Orford, N.H. High School, Class of 1935. She later attended nursing school where she earned her R.N. Diploma. She had been employed at several Brattleboro healthcare facilities that included Brattleboro Memorial Hospital, the former Johnson's Nursing Home, former Garfield's Rest Home and for several years was a nursing instructor at the former Thompson School for Practical Nursing. She also performed private duty nursing in the greater Brattleboro area and retired in 1981. Mrs. Winchester's life centered around her family. She especially enjoyed gardening. She was a natural healer who was very proud of her nursing profession, always taking an interest in the wellbeing of others. A woman of deep faith she was a longtime member of the Green Mountain Chapel on Western Avenue. On December 14, 1938 in Brattleboro, she was married to Ray Winchester who predeceased her on January 10, 2008. Survivors include two sons, Rodney Winchester and wife, Doreen of Brattleboro, Ralph Winchester of Guilford, two daughters, Janice Nadeau of Stillwater, MN and Iva Wood and husband, Joseph of Winchester, N.H. Additionally she leaves one brother, Proctor George of Rochester, N.Y., 17 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren 15 great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by one sister, Kathryn Batchelder and a half-brother, Caryl George. FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 11a.m. at the Green Mountain Chapel on Western Ave. with Pastor Bill Steele, officiating. Burial will follow the services in Meetinghouse Hill Cemetery where she will be laid to rest next to her beloved husband. Calling hours will be held at the church on Monday from 9:30a.m. until the start of the services.
