Betty Rafus Obituary
Betty E. Rafus

1942 - 2016 Betty E. Rafus, 73, a longtime resident of West Halifax, passed away on February 19, 2016, surrounded by her family at the home of her sister Jean in Brattleboro where she had made her home for the past seven months due to a period of declining health. Betty was born in Halifax on June 24, 1942, the daughter of the late Harry and Ada (Dalrymple) LaRock. She was raised and educated in Wilmington and was a graduate of Wilmington High School, class of 1960. On June 25, 1960 she was married to Thomas D. Rafus, who predeceased her on November 13, 2010. Betty and Tom were able to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with a large number of family and friends. It was a memory that Betty cherished, as it was the last milestone she and Tom were able to celebrate together before his passing. Betty was a homemaker all her life. Her greatest joy was being surrounded by her family and preparing meals for them. She was always concerned that there was enough to eat. So there was always plenty of food including family favorites, such as her homemade pies, breads and baked beans. Betty also enjoyed her part in maple syrup season of canning all syrup that was made by the family. She was also a foster mother to 27 foster children from 1968 to 1981. She cared for children from both the Brattleboro and Bennington areas. In addition to foster care Betty also babysat for numerous local children. She served on the Elementary School board, was a dispatcher for the Halifax Fire Department and she and her sister Jean for many years sponsored fund raisers in order to put on the children's town Christmas party making sure every child in town had a wrapped gift. Betty enjoyed bingo and tag sales. She also enjoyed knitting, crocheting and sewing as evident by all the Afghans she made for family and donated to fundraisers. She was concerned that children had what they needed to stay warm. She made countless mittens and hats which were given to almost every child she knew. Several pairs of mittens found their way to the elementary school for those who needed a pair. Betty is survived by her sister Jean (Dick) Earle of Brattleboro, a brother, Richard (Sharon) LaRock of Rockwall, TX and was predeceased by a sister Beth (Stub) Dalrymple and a brother Albert (Bud) LaRock. She is also survived by her five children, Jackie (Joe Signa) Hill of Swanzey, NH, Tim (Rhonda) Rafus of Whitingham, Brad (Peggy) Rafus of Halifax, Jennifer (Kevin) Birch of Jacksonville and Stephanie (Dennis) Pike of Whitingham. Betty also is survived by her 13 grandchildren, Justin and Jocelyn Hill, Brianna and Joey Rafus, Matt Belanger, David, Kayla and Rachel Webber, Nick and Cody Birch, Emily Hohn, D.J. and Amber Pike. As well as one great granddaughter Clara Belanger, many nieces, nephews and her loyal companion, her dog Casey. FUNERAL NOTICE: Graveside services will be held on Saturday May 7th at 1:00 p.m. at the West Halifax Village Cemetery with a luncheon to follow at the West Halifax Elementary School.
