1934-2016 Brattleboro, VT Betty Lou (Davis) Sawyer, 81, of Speno Court, a resident of Brattleboro since 1966, died peacefully Wednesday evening, February 24, in the comfort of her home following a lengthy battle with cancer. Betty was born in Manchester, VT on May 25, 1934, the daughter of Cecil C. and Hazel (Gaskell) Davis. A member of the First Congregational Church, she graduated from Burr & Burton Seminary in 1952 and the University of Vermont, School of Dental Hygiene in 1955. Betty went on to work for dental offices and school districts in Benning ton and Rutland Counties and also lived and worked in Duxbury, MA and Norwich, CT. Upon moving to Brattleboro, Betty was employed by the Brattleboro School District and then worked in the office of Dr. Jeffrey Munson. Following her retirement as a Dental Hygienist and up until her death, Betty enjoyed her part-time work as an engraver at Newton Business. Betty had many wonderful memories of growing up in Manchester, skiing at Snow Valley and Bromley Mt. and of time spent at the lake house her parents built on Lake St. Catherine. She was an avid fan of the New York Yankees and Giants. She enjoyed being outdoors and in the sun. She lived a full life but was first and foremost, a loving wife, mother and grandmother who put family before herself. She rarely missed any event that her family was a part of. She always saw the best in people and had a beautiful smile. In 1963, she married Darrell R. Sawyer and they enjoyed over 50 years together before his death in December 2011. She leaves one son, Christopher Sawyer and his wife Jennifer of Brattleboro, VT and grandchildren, Thaddeus, Maren and Gabriella. Additionally she leaves step sons Jeffrey Sawyer of New York City, NY and Thomas Sawyer and his wife Julie of South Burlington, VT and grandchildren Darrell, TJ and Jordan; her sister Nancy Davis Irons of Port Charlotte, FL; and nine nieces and nephews. Mrs. Sawyer was predeceased by her brother, Karl C. Davis. FUNERAL SERVICES: Family and friends may call at the funeral home from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. A brief memorial service will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon. In lieu of flowers, Memorial contributions in her name may be made to the Windham County Humane Society, P.O. Box 397, Brattleboro, VT 05302.
