Beverly Alberts Obituary

Beverly Alberts, age 89, died on October 20th in Brattleboro, VT.

She was born in 1928 to Rose and Morris David in Newport R.I. where she was raised amidst her seven siblings and developed her lifelong love of the ocean. She married Murray Alberts in 1949 and they lived in southern New Hampshire and the Boston area for 25 years. The marriage ended in divorce although they remained friends until Murray's death ten years ago. In 1973, Beverly moved to Putney, VT to complete her college education at Windham College and she lived in Putney, Westminster West, and Brattleboro for nearly the rest of her life, leaving only to receive a master's degree and to teach for several years at a community college in New York State.

Beverly found her true home for decades as a member of the All Souls Unitarian Universalist at West Village Meeting House congregation in Brattleboro where she was nourished spiritually and as a participant in a deeply caring community. She was active in the church and as a hospice volunteer in the Greater Falls Area. She was well known in the Brattleboro area as a great lover of and supporter of the arts, volunteering at Windham Arts gallery and the Brattleboro Museum of Art and for a time representing individual artists in the region. She loved The Yellow Barn music series and appreciated the wealth of classical music available in Guilford and Marlboro as well. She was a seeker and took advantage of educational opportunities throughout her life.

Survivors include daughter Lynne Beck and her husband Geoffrey Beck; daughter Laurie Alberts and husband Tom O'Neill; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two sisters; and myriad nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. Her son Charles Alberts predeceased her.

The family would like to thank the caring staff at Bradley House and her congregation for making her final weeks rich with kindness and fellowship.

SERVICES: A memorial service at West Village Meeting House will occur at a later date.

Donations may be made in her name to the All Souls UU at West Village Meeting House, West Brattleboro, VT.

Beverly was a good and loyal friend to the Windham Art Gallery (where I was the Gallery Coordinator for three years) and we remained friends after the gallery closed in 2009, although I had not seen in her much in the last two years. We had many lovely lunches, she particularly liked the Marina, and she always relished talking about art and life. Happily she was a deep talker and did not skim on the surface of things. She had a lot of stamina and a steady and private spiritual life that gave her strength and wisdom. Fond farewell Beverly.

Beverly had a major impact on my life. She was the first person I met when I moved to Brattleboro 27 years ago. She introduced me to the Arts Council and encouraged me to participate in the Student Art Month program, where, for several years, I co-chaired the program and we raised money for the arts in the schools. When Bill and I moved to Rhode Island, we never lost contact. When she visited Newport, we would meet there and she would regale me with tales of that city by the sea. Whenever we return to Vermont to visit, she was there to greet us. We spoke regularly and she was on my mind this week as it was time to call her. She was a wonderful friend and companion. I will miss her terribly.
