1930 - 2016 VERNON Bradford Arthur Pfenning, 85, formerly of Pond Road, passed away Monday morning, February 1, 2016 at Vernon Green Nursing Home following a period of declining health. Mr. Pfenning was born in Sherburne, Vt. on April 28, 1930, the son of Frank and Anna (Austin) Pfenning. He was raised and educated in Sherburne (a suburb of Killington). He proudly served in the U.S. Navy from 1948 to 1950, stationed on an aircraft carrier in the European Theater. Following his honorable discharge, he enrolled at Castleton State College, graduating with his Bachelors of Science in Education, Class of 1954. From 1954 to 1992, Mr. Pfenning taught at Brattle-boro Union High School. He also taught 7th and 8th grade math and science at Brattleboro Area Middle School. He spent many years as the director of the Audio/Visual Department. During the summers, Mr. Pfenning ran his own Driver's Education Program where he taught several of his current students. Mr. Pfenning retired after 38 faithful years with the school system. Mr. Pfenning attended Vernon Advent Christian Church and was a member of the Vermont Teachers Assoc. and the American Legion, Brattleboro Post 5. Of his pastimes and interests he enjoyed golfing, bowling, fishing, camping and deer hunting. He was also a regular attendee at BUHS's sporting events. On August 28, 1954, in Springfield, VT he was married to Joyce Pelkey. His wife of 56 years pre-deceased him on November 29, 2010. Survivors include two daughters, Cheryl Deyo and husband, Peter of Vernon and Gay Pfenning also of Vernon, one brother, Bernard Pfenning and wife, Chris of Burlington, two sisters, Lucille Staples and Gladys Cameron, both of Woodstock, five grandchildren, seven great-grand-children and many nieces and nephews. FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, Feb. 13th at 11a.m. at Vernon Advent Christian Church with Pastor Bruce Burks officiating. Burial will be in Tyler Cemetery. Memorial contributions in Mr. Pfenning's name may be made to Vernon Green Nursing Home Activities Fund, 61 Greenway Drive, Vernon, VT 05354.
