Calvin C. Powling, Sr.

1925 - 2015 MARLBORO Calvin C. Powling, Sr., 89, of Augur Hole Road passed away Wednesday afternoon, April 1, at the home of his son in Newfane following a brief illness. Mr. Powling was born in Weston, Vermont on May 8, 1925, the son of George and Mildred (Baxter) Powling. He attended grade school and was a self-educated man who through the years saw, read, and experienced new and different things. A true native Vermonter and longtime resident of Marlboro, he worked as a logger in the family business, Powling Brothers Logging eventually joining his son in the business. He had worked up until January 2015. He loved horses and throughout the years owned several, competing in area draft horse competitions, continuing to attend area events on a seasonal basis. An ardent outdoorsman he also enjoyed hunting and time spent with his family. On May 18, 1946, in Claremont, New Hampshire in a simple ceremony, he was married to Elizabeth Howard. His faithful and devoted wife of 35 years predeceased him in 1981. Survivors include his three children, son, Calvin Powling, Jr. (Toni) of Newfane; daughters, Betty Brown (Francis) of Marlboro, and Susan Taylor of Jacksonville; one brother, Percy Powling of Williamsville; and a sister, Violet Howard of Marlboro. Additionally he leaves 11 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three sisters and two brothers. FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the ATAMANIUK FUNERAL HOME with Pastor Mark Herrick officiating. Burial will follow in Center Cemetery in Marlboro. A reception will follow the committal services to be held at the American Legion on Linden Street. Friends are invited to call at the funeral home on Monday from 7 - 9 p.m. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions in Mr. Powling's name may be made to the Marlboro Volunteer Fire Dept. P.O.
