1952 - 2015 SCARBOROUGH, ME -- Carrie Towne Rhinelander, on Monday, August 10th, lost her 17-year battle with breast cancer. Born January 7, 1952 in Burlington, VT, Carrie was the daughter of Dr. Raymond D. Towne, MD and Janet Spaulding Towne. Carrie grew up in Underhill, VT and graduated from Mount Mansfield High School in 1969. Carrie studied nursing at the University of Vermont, graduating in 1973 with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Carrie was a dedicated nurse who worked at the then Mary Fletcher Hospital, The Visiting Nurses Association in Burlington and the Neo Natal Intensive Care Unit at Children's Hospital in Louisville, KY.She received an advanced degree in Neo Natal Nursing from the University of Louisville. Later in her career, Carrie worked in senior management in home health care in Portland, ME. She became a Medicare certified Hospice Nurse in VT, N.H. and ME. She also worked as the area Director of the Visiting Nurses' Association and Hospice of Southern Maine and New Hampshire. Her incredible daughter, Julia Hamilton Rhinelander of Portland, ME, survives Carrie. Other survivors include Carrie's brother, Dr. Gary Spaulding Towne, Professor of Music at the University of North Dakota, and two nephews: Jonathan Spaulding Towne of Washington DC and Andrew Armstrong Towne. Carrie grew up skiing at the Underhill Ski Bowl, Smuggler's Notch and Stowe. While living in Maine, Carrie became a Certified Professional Ski instructor and taught for many years at the Sunday River Ski Area in Newry, ME.She was recognized for her work in teaching young children to ski.
