Catherine Toomey Obituary
Brattleboro - Catherine A. "Cathy" Toomey, 68, of Williams Street, well known and respected Brattleboro florist, died unexpectedly Saturday night, November 11, 2017 at her home.

Cathy was born in Brattleboro on March 12, 1949, the daughter of Herbert and Catherine (Gildea) Smith. She was raised and educated in South Londonderry and was a graduate of Burr & Burton Academy, Class of 1967. She went on to attend the University of Vermont, earning her BA in psychology in 1971.

With her husband Ed, she owned and operated Linden Gardens, assuming ownership of the business from the Bryant family in 1989. Cathy was well known for her beautiful arrangements and floral design expertise. Throughout the years she taught floral design classes, sharing her unique design techniques to many in the greater Brattleboro area. Previously she had been employed at Dennis & Jamison, and Stow Mills in Brattleboro.

Of her pastimes and interests, she was a voracious reader, enjoyed gardening and skiing in her younger years, loved small animals, and was an avid New England Patriots fan.

Cathy was known for her spirit of friendship and pleasant personality, always sharing a kind word or thought with others. She had an exquisite understanding of human nature and routinely counseled her friends and family throughout her life.

In June of 1971 at the Chapel of Snows in Stratton, she was married to Fergus Stewartson Smith. She later married Edward R. Toomey on her family's property in South Londonderry on October 1, 1983.

Besides her faithful and devoted husband of 34 years, she leaves two sons, Fergus D. Smith of Brattleboro and Trevor S. Smith of Enfield, CT, a sister to her two sons, Dana Maerta Rosenborg Smith of New York City, two brothers, Ronald Smith of Florida and Robert Smith of South Londonderry, and many nieces, nephews, great nieces, and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents and one brother, Nelson "Butch" Smith.

SERVICES: Friends are invited to call at the Atamaniuk Funeral Home on Friday from 4 to 6 P.M.

Graveside committal services will be held in Glebe View Cemetery in South Londonderry in the springtime when the cemetery reopens. She will be laid to rest in the Smith family lot.
