Cyril "Ken" Heile

July 17, 1934 - June 25, 2015 BRATTLEBORO Cyril "Ken" Heile passed from this life on June 25, 2015, at the age of 80. Born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio, he was a classical languages graduate of Xavier University, served his country as a member of the U.S. Army, went on to study Spanish at L'Universite de las Americas in Mexico City, and received his MA from The University of Michigan. While living in Cincinnati, Ken taught junior high school, was a technician and cameraman for radio and television, was an active ham radio operator, and was Activities Director and diving coach at Phillips Swim Club. At The University of Michigan, he and his wife, Carolyn (Cal), were Resident Directors of Eaton House dorm where they formed many lasting memories and friendships. A resident of Vermont since 1973, Ken was a Spanish and Latin teacher at Brattleboro Union Junior and Senior High School until his retirement in 1995. Ken continued teaching in retirement at Mount Snow Academy until this year. Ken served the Brattleboro and Guilford communities in numerous ways, including the BCTV Board, the Guilford Historical Society, Windham County Retired Teachers Assoc., Friends of Algiers Village, The Brattleboro Museum and Arts Center, Brattleboro Winter Carnival committee and President, Youth Services Host Home, the Haunted House fundraiser for the Kids Place, ELF/Four Winds volunteer at Guilford Elementary School, and springboard diving instructor at Brattleboro and Vernon pools. Ken (along with Cal) were the recipients of the Guilford Citizens of the Year award in grateful recognition of their steadfast volunteerism within the community. Ken and his wife, Cal, used their musical talents through their decades-long performances at community events, nursing homes, weddings and funerals, and as leaders of Saint Michael Catholic Church's folk group. Ken is survived by his wife of 44 years, his siblings and their families, and his in-laws and their families. SERVICES: A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, July 18, 2015 at 11 a.m. at Guilford Central Elementary School.
