Columbus, OH- Edna Katherine Cowling, 100, a longtime resident of Putney Road in Brattleboro passed away early Wednesday morning, December 28, 2016 at McNaughten Pointe Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Columbus. Prior to becoming a resident at the facility she made her home at the Woodlands in Columbus.

Mrs. Cowling was born in St. Johnsbury, Vermont on July 26, 1916 the daughter of Clyde and Emily (Lucas) Drown. She was raised and educated in St. Johnsbury attending schools in Holyoke, Massachusetts eventually returning to St. Johnsbury where she graduated from St. Johnsbury Academy, Class of 1935.

She had been employed as a store clerk at the former Root's Pharmacy and the former Hotel Pharmacy both on Main Street in Brattleboro. Previously and prior to moving to Brattleboro she worked at the former F.W. Woolworth Store in St. Johnsbury.

Mrs. Cowling was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and life member of the Mizpah Chapter #40 of the Eastern Star in Chester, Vermont. Steadfast in her walk of faith she was a longtime member of First Congregational Church in Brattleboro.

Civically, she was a volunteer in the coffee shop at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital, served on the board at Holton Home in Brattleboro, and worked the blood drives at the Elk's Home for the American Red Cross, Windham County Chapter.

Of her leisure time activities Mrs. Cowling enjoyed ice skating, swimming, gardening, knitting and crafts and time shared with her family. She will be remembered for her spirit of friendship and pleasant personality.

On April 26, 1941 in St. Johnsbury she was married to Paul E, Cowling. After getting married the Cowlings made their home in Chester, Vermont. Her devoted and loving husband of 52 years predeceased her on April 7, 1994.

Survivors include two daughters, Jan C. Esden and her husband Robert of Columbus, and Barbara C. Brien and her husband Eugene of Manchester, New Hampshire. One sister, Luella Demers of Fallon, Nevada, seven grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

SERVICES: Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, January 7th at 1:00 P.M. at First Congregational Church in West Brattleboro with Mrs. Cowling's son-in-law Pastor Robert Esden officiating. A reception will follow the services to be held at the church. Burial will take place in Mount Pleasant Cemetery in St. Johnsbury in the springtime.
