Elinor Walsh Obituary
Elinor A. Walsh

1953 - 2016 On March 23, 2016 Elinor Ann Walsh succumbed to her long struggle with COPD. Elinor was born on February 11, 1953 in Queens New York, the first child of Elinor Ann Hudkins Walsh of Summit New Jersey and James Joseph Walsh of Long Island City. In 1955, after the birth of Elinor's brother, the Walsh family moved to Merrick, Long Island where she spent her formative years. At age 8, Ellie Ann was preceded by her father, and spent the rest of her childhood being raised in a small single-parent family. Ellie attended Sacred Heart Catholic Elementary School, and Stanford H. Calhoun High School, prior to earning her Baccalaureate of Science Degree in Psychology from the State University of New Paltz in 1975. After graduation Elinor was married and moved to Greeley Colorado, were she lived for a few years working with troubled adolescents, in a group home system called Our House Inc. Ellie returned to the east coast and Vermont, were she had spent many visits while growing up at her Uncle's farm in Gassetts. This time it was at the prompting of a good friend of her and her husband's, who sent them a Vermont Life Magazine with a feature article on Brattleboro, its counter cultural nature, its large Psychiatric hospital offering employment, and generally a place for Hippies to grow old. Ellie worked most of her career at the Brattleboro Retreat, doing both direct patient care and specializing in discharge planning, a role she also filled for a few years at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital. She ended her 30 year career at the Retreat working in the out patient children's program. There her talents for providing a caring and respectful yet no nonsense supportive instruction and supervision seemed to be most appreciated. Ellie would often be seen in meetings busy with her current knitting project yet still able to provide a clear and direct opinion on topic and unambiguous to all there. El had many talents artistic in nature, in addition to her knitting and flair for Crafts and decorating, El was a graduate of the Chester School of Wallpapering and for a time made her living working alongside of construction workers and painters who thought twice before touching her equipment or getting in her way (only half kidding). By far Ellie's proudest achievement was, after her second marriage, the birth of her daughter Mariah K. Hayes. Eleanor was proceeded by her father James Joseph Walsh in 1960, her mother Eleanor Ann Hudkins Walsh in 2003, and is survived by her daughter Mariah K. Hayes of Putney Vermont, her brother James Joseph Walsh of Saxtons River Vermont, and her extended family, many of whom go by the name Hudkins. FUNERAL NOTICE: A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:00 AM, Saturday April 30 at St. Michael Roman Catholic Church, 47 Walnut Street, Brattleboro, followed at Noon by a Celebration of life Memorial at Turning Point Recovery Center 39 Elm St. Brattleboro Vt.
