1927 - 2016 Vernon - Helen Gilbert, 87, a lifelong resident of Brattleboro died peacefully, Tuesday, July 5, 2016 at Vernon Green Nursing Home with her family by her side. Helen was born at home in Brattleboro on Nov. 5, 1927, the daughter of Harry and Helen (Robinson) Stewart. She was raised in Brattleboro and attended Brattleboro public schools. She was a devoted homemaker and mother and babysat many children throughout the years. Many of those children remained close to her today. Active civically, she was a faithful member and served in different positions for The American Legion Brattleboro Post #5 Auxiliary. She assisted in many of the organization and functions and was a faithful volunteer. She also held membership in the VFW Post #1034 Auxiliary and a past member of the F.O. Eagles Auxiliary Brattleboro. Her life centered around her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandsons. The light of her life in recent years were her two great grandsons who remained a central part of her life even while she resided at Vernon Green. On August 23, 1952, at The Methodist Church she was married to Edmund E. Gilbert who predeceased her. Survivors include one daughter, Patricia Gilbert of Vernon, one son Eugene Gilbert of Hinsdale; two grandchildren, Shenandoah Gilbert of Vernon and Gregory Gilbert of Long Island, NY; a daughter-in- law, Donna Gilbert of NY; two great grandsons, Kade and Reis Perrotti; a grandson-in- law, Patrick Perrotti of Vernon, and a brother and sister-in- law, Robert and Arlene Gilbert of Marlboro. Additionally she leaves many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by 6 siblings. Helen was known by all her knew her as a loving woman, always with a smile and with a heart of gold. FUNERAL NOTICE: Graveside committal services will be conducted Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. in Locust Ridge Cemetery. Friends and family are invited to call at the Atamaniuk Funeral Home on Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. A reception will follow the graveside services at the VFW Post #1034 on Black Mountain Road.
