Jeffrey McCanna Obituary
Jeffrey McCanna

1949 - 2015 WEST LEBANON, N.H. Jeffrey F. McCanna, died Sunday, Mar. 1, 2015 after a bout with chronic illness. He was 65. McCanna was defined by his charm, wry wit, good looks and blistering smarts. His mother called him the Walking Encyclopedia. And she was right. Throughout the Connecticut River Valley, McCanna was well known as a commercial loan officer. A self described "belt and suspenders man" McCanna worked tirelessly and meticulously at several banks, climbing the ranks at Vermont National Bank, Bellows Falls Trust Company, Chittenden Bank and, finally, Connecticut River Bank where he served as Executive Vice President before retiring at age 62. In all, McCanna's banking career spanned 39 years, beginning in the early 1970s as a part-time teller at Jersey Shore State Bank in Jersey Shore, Pa., then to First Agricultural Bank in Great Barrington, MA, before moving to Vermont in 1987 and, later, New Hampshire. Toward the end of of his career, McCanna took pride in training and mentoring the newest generation of bankers. McCanna was an avid hiker and traveler. His exploits earned him a spot in New Hampshire's 4,000-Footer Club, meaning that he had climbed the state's 48 mountains that exceed 4,000 feet in elevation (something he had accomplished in his 50's). He had also hiked to the bottom of the Grand Canyon, to the top of Half Dome in Yosemite National Park, across Death Valley and into Peru's Machu Picchu, among other storied locations. He was a frequent volunteer for the Appalachian Mountain Club, where, for more than a decade, he helped maintain his beloved adopted Ethan Pond Trail near Franconia, N.H. He also served as editor for the trail volunteers' newsletter Adoption Papers. McCanna had visited more than 30 U.S. states and a dozen European countries, including Germany where he lived for several years as a member of the U.S. Army (USAREUR, VII Corps, 127th AG, in Nuremberg). McCanna was born Oct. 30, 1949, in Bellefonte, PA., the son of Francis O. McCanna and Virginia (Bennison) McCanna. After graduating from Jersey Shore High School, McCanna earned a bachelor of arts in economics from Lycoming College, Williamsport, PA., in 1971. He was a member of Tau Kappa Kappa fraternity. He had two true loves of his life. On April 12, 1972, he married his college sweetheart, Susan A. Kamus, who tragically predeceased him in 2011. Later, he began a second chapter with his newfound love, Peggy Healey Kennedy, whom he married earlier this year. He may not have been the best of husbands, but neither was he the worst. He is survived by his son, Benjamin McCanna, and his daughter-in-law, Jennifer Mora, and his two grandsons (the particular joy of his retired life), Otis McCanna and Arlo McCanna of Portland, Maine. His is also survived by his dear sister, Laura DeCapria, of Jersey Shore, PA., and by numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. McCanna's life will be celebrated this summer at a private event with close family. An online guest book is available to leave a message of condolence by visiting : www.rickerfuneralhome.com
