Josephine Griswold Obituary

BELLOWS FALLS -- Josephine I. Griswold, 95, of Bellows Falls died Sunday, Jan. 25, 2004, at the Mount Ascutney Hospital in Windsor.

She was born Jan. 11, 1909, in Windham, the daughter of Charles and Hattie (Frederick) Fontaine.

She married Emerson Griswold on Dec. 7, 1930. He died on July 7, 1969.

She graduated from Chester High School and Bay Path Institute in Brattleboro. After graduation she was employed by Hugh Henry, Esq. of Chester.

She was later employed as the assistant clerk in the Bartonsville Post Office. Mrs. Griswold and her husband were employed by the Town of Rockingham as the matron and superintendent of the Rockingham Town Farm for 25 years.

Mrs. Griswold was a seventh degree member of the Bartonsville Grange for 63 years and held the offices of master, secretary and treasurer. She was also a member and volunteer of the Bellows Falls Senior Center and a charter member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Chester.

She leaves a son, Clayton Griswold of Bellows Falls; two granddaughters; five great-granddaughters; and nieces and cousins.

She was predeceased by two brothers, Robert and Caroll.
