Julia Szostak Obituary
Julia M. Szostak

1918 - 2015 BRATTLEBORO, VT Julia M. Szostak passed away on Christmas Day, December 25, 2015, at Thompson House after a courageous battle over the last few years with declining health. She was 97 years old. Age slowly took a toll on her body but Julia's spirit remained strong. Born in Franklin, NH, January 26, 1918, the daughter of Michael and Antoinetti (Krause) Pastuzszak, Julia was one of 9 children. They grew up on a farm where their large family learned the value of self-sufficiency and taking care of each other. To aid in the World War II effort, Julia moved to East Hartford, CT, to work for Pratt & Whitney Aircraft, while her three brothers went off to war. It was there that she met Henry Szostak. Henry and Julia later married and settled in Westfield, MA, eventually buying a home on King Street and raising a family. She remained in this home for over 60 years, until health issues brought her to The Arbors in Westfield and then to Thompson House in Brattleboro. Julia developed deep attachments to her large family and numerous friends. She was unselfish in her caring for others. Although her formal education was limited, she was an avid reader and an outstanding cook and baker. Every kid in the King Street neighborhood knew they could always count on Julia for cookies or a piece of her famous apple or lemon pies! To assist her family financially, she took in seamstress work. There are many homes in Westfield that have drapes, slip covers, clothes, and even wedding gowns, handmade by Julia. She also had artistic talent as displayed by her craftwork and furniture refinishing. In addition, she was a talented wallpaper hanger and painter who always was willing to help her family and friends, especially with challenging projects. And, she was untiring at stacking firewood! Julia is predeceased by her beloved husband, Henry, who died in 1989. In addition to her mother and father, she is predeceased by: her brothers Edward and Raymond Pastuzszak, her sisters Bunny Risley, Nellie Kurowski, Loda Eqounis, and Pauline Bozek, and her daughter-in-laws Nancy Wrinkle and Patty Szostak. She is survived by: her son Daniel and his wife Ann Szostak, her son Michael and his partner Elizabeth Julia Stoumen, her sister Helen Robichaud and her brother John Pastuzszak and his wife, Florence. Surviving also are her grandchildren and their spouses Tim and Jen Heutz, Andy and Lisa Szostak, and Jessica and Scott Senese, and her great grandchildren Julia Szostak, Abby Heutz, Miranda Heutz, and Roman Senese. FUNERAL NOTICE: On Saturday, January 2, at 12:30pm there will be a short service at the Firtion Adams Funeral Home at 76 Broad Street, Westfield, MA, followed by a burial of her ashes at the Pine Hill Cemetery on Court Street. Following these services, all are invited to a luncheon at the Tavern Restaurant, Westfield, 2 Broad Street (former post office), that will begin about 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to: Thompson House Activity Dept.-Garden Fund, 80 Maple Street, Brattleboro, VT 05301.
