Michael Phillip Smith, 36, of 18 Evelyn Park, Pittsfield, formerly of Dalton and Hinsdale, died Friday, July 27, 2012, at Berkshire Medical Center of injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident earlier in the day.
Born in Pittsfield on October 20, 1975, a son of William J. Smith and Sandra A. Fassell Wood, he was educated in Hinsdale schools, attended Pittsfield High School, and was a 1993 graduate of Galilleo High School in San Francisco, California. He also attended Kansas State University.
At the time of his death, Mr. Smith was employed as an installer for All-American Fence in Lee. Prior to that he had worked for Berkshire Wireless in Lee.
He enjoyed motorcycles, was an avid sports fan, especially rugby, and enjoyed traveling.
Mr. Smith leaves his mother, Sandra Wood and her husband, Mitchell, of Vernon, Vt., and his father, William Smith, of Pittsfield. He is also survived by two sons, Ryan Michael Smith of Overland Park, Kan., and Ethan Michael Koepsell of Rochester, Minn.; three brothers, William C. Smith of Burlington, Vt., Robert G. Smith of Hinsdale, and Jeremy A. Smith of Brattleboro, Vt.; a sister, Amanda F. Smith, of Carmel, N.Y.; many nieces and nephews and many aunts and uncles; as well as his partner, Jackie Kearin of Pittsfield; and his former wife, Stacy Thompson of Overland Park, Kan.
He was pre-deceased by his maternal grandmother, Phyllis Fassell, his paternal grandmother, Beverly Smith, and by his nephew, Skylar Mack.
FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services for Michael Phillip Smith will be held Friday, August 3, at 9:15 a.m. from DERY-FOLEY FUNERAL HOME in Dalton with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 a.m., at St. Agnes Church celebrated by Rev. Christopher A. Malatesta, Pastor. Burial will follow in Maple Street Cemetery in Hinsdale. Calling hours will be held Thursday, from 4 to 7 p.m., at the Dery-Foley Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Michael may be made to the Smith & Koepsell Children's Trust, to establish a trust for his children, in care of the Funeral Home, 890 East Main Street, Dalton.
