1945-2013 PUTNEY Paul E. Mousel, 68, of Old Stage Road and a resident of Putney since 1979 died unexpectedly Tuesday afternoon, August 27, 2013 at North Adams (Mass) Regional Hospital while on business in North Adams. Paul was born in Fort Dodge, Iowa on June 5, 1945 the son of Paul F. and Gladys (Larson) Mousel. He was raised and educated in Nevada, Iowa graduating from Nevada High School, Class of 1964. On a basketball scholarship he went on to attend Eastern New Mexico University and later Northwest Missouri University where he earned his BS degree in Physical Education and Biology. As an accomplished basketball player following college he played semi-pro basketball in Des Moines, Iowa. For many years he owned and operated Mountain Paul's General Store in Putney and Putney Laundry. At the time of his passing and for the past 12 years he owned Big Worm Bait & Tackle. Previously, (1974-1979), he resided in Perry, Iowa where he had been employed by the Oscar Meyer Company. Paul coached basketball at Bellows Falls Union High School, Landmark College in Putney and Putney Central School. Of his pastimes and interests, he enjoyed golf, fishing and time shared with his family, especially with his grandson Quinn. He was also an avid New England Patriots fan and for many years a Pats season ticket holder. Paul was well known for his spirit of kindness and generosity as well as his wonderful sense of humor. On June 12, 1971 at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Verona, New Jersey he was married to Patricia Buckholz who he met while attending college. Survivors include one son, Benjamin Mousel and wife to be Emily Thurston and her daughter Quincy all of Putney, one daughter Leah Mousel Austin, her husband Jeffrey and their son Quinn of Brookline, Vermont, one brother, Duane Mousel of Nevada, Iowa, a sister, Joan Mousel Brummel of Pella Iowa and many nieces, nephews and cousins. A Memorial Service in celebration of Paul's life will be conducted Monday, September 9th at 11:30 a.m. at the West Village Meeting House on South Street with Pastor Paul Grout of Putney officiating. A reception will follow the services. Memorial contributions in Paul's name may be made to the Putney Volunteer Fire Dept. U.S. Route 5, Putney, VT 05346.
