Raymond M. Smart Jr.

1949 - 2015 TILTON, N.H. Raymond "Raymie" M. Smart Jr., 65, passed away June 21, 2015 at Tilton, NH Veteran's Home following a lengthy illness. He was born on July 1, 1949 in Exeter, NH, son of the late Raymond M. Smart Sr., and Shirley (Depew) Smart who died when Ray was very young. His grandmother, Eleanor Smart raised Ray when he was young. Also Ray's step-mother, Mary Smart had a large influence in his life. He grew up in Raymond, NH and graduated from Raymond High School, Class of 1967. He was a veteran of the US Army from 1969 to 1971, and served a tour in Vietnam. Ray worked for the State of NH for many years and later for the Sawyer-Bentwood Saw Mill in Whitingham, VT. On nights and weekends for many years, he also worked for Fred Cook at the barn helping with the horses. One of Ray's biggest enjoyments was being involved with horses. He had a love for horses and horse pulling which he did at the fairs for many years. He was best known for his willingness to try and lend a helping hand. He was a member of the Eastern Draft Horses Association for many years, was a member of the Raymond VFW, along with the Sons of the American Legion, in Readsboro, VT. In February of 1996, Ray suffered an injury from a fall that caused him to change his lifestyle completely. In 2007, he moved to the Tilton Veterans Home, where he lived his remaining years. Ray was predeceased by his folks, along with his brother, Willis Smart, and sister, Sandra Smart. He leaves behind a son, Raymond M. Smart III along with his wife and two children in Maryland, daughter, Michelle Hurlbert and husband, Brad of Warwick, MA., along with two grandchildren, Jordan and Jarred, and daughter, Melissa Georlach of Williston, FL., sister, Donna Smart of Epping, NH, along with nieces and nephews. SERVICES: There are no calling hours. A graveside service will be held on Thursday, June 25, 2015 at 2 p.m. at the NH State Veterans Cemetery, Boscawen, NH.
