1928 - 2015 BRATTLEBORO Regina Veronica "Jeannie" Witalis, 87 of Moreland Avenue, a lifelong resident of town died peacefully Saturday morning, December 19, 2015 at Pine Heights Nursing Home following a lengthy illness surrounded by her family. She had been a resident at the facility for the past three years. Jeannie was born in Brattleboro on August 24, 1928 the daughter of Arthur and Bessie (Howard) Giroux. She was raised and educated in Brattleboro attending public schools. She had been employed by the town of Brattleboro as a secretary/receptionist working in the Municipal Center for many years up until her retirement. Previously she had worked for Kenny Pike Insurance Company, at the former BookPress and during her earlier years had been employed at the former Berkshire Fine Spinning Associates on Cotton Mill Hill. Jeannie was a communicant of Saint Michael's Roman Catholic Church and held membership in the B.P.O. Elks Emblem Club, Lodge #1499 in Brattleboro. Of her leisure time activities she enjoyed quilting, polka dancing, and visiting area flea markets. She was an excellent cook and known for her delicious Polish delicacies. Jeannie was a very caring, energetic, loving and generous wife, mother and grandmother and was fondly known by her nieces and nephews as "Ciocia." Many who knew her will remember her pleasant personality and spirit of friendship. On November 25, 1947 at Saint Michael's Catholic Church she was married to Edmund Witalis who survives. Besides her devoted and faithful husband of 68 years she leaves one daughter, Cheryl Brentnall and her husband, William of Gales Ferry, CT, one granddaughter, Nicole Brentnall of OR, two great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great nephews. She was predeceased by one brother, Frederick Giroux and two sisters, Heloise LeClaire and Edyth Chickering. SERVICES: A memorial gathering will be held on Wednesday afternoon from 12Noon until 2P.M. at the Elks Home on Putney Road. Refreshments will be served. There are no calling hours at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Jeannie's name may be made to Saint Michael's School, 47 walnut Street, Brattleboro, VT 05301 in care of Elaine Beam, Principal.
