1928-2016 HINSDALE, NH Richard E. Ellison, 87, of Monument Road, a resident of Hinsdale for the past 25 years died Saturday morning, March 5, 2016 peacefully in his sleep in the comfort of his home following a courageous battle with lung cancer. With him at the time of his passing was his wife Elizabeth and good friend, Michael Gillis. Richard was born in Rutland, Vermont on April 8, 1928 the son of Leon and Margery (Barber Murray) Ellison. He was raised and educated in Rutland graduating Valedictorian of his class from Rutland High School. It was his wish to become a physician and he attended the University of Vermont but lack of finances prevented him from continuing his education after his first year at UVM. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a parachute rigger. Following his honorable discharge from active service he learned to fly earning his pilot's license and at one point owned his own airplane. Richard was a member of Union Local #1121 for over 30 years as a union carpenter and millwright. He was an accomplished carpenter he is credited in designing and building his own home in Hinsdale something he was very proud of. He was a member of both the American Legion, Brattleboro Post #5 and the V.F.W. Carl M. Dessaint Post #1034. Richard was an avid hunter and fly fisherman who leaned to tie his own flies as a young boy. On December 31, 1987 in Brattleboro he was married to Elizabeth Tudor who survives. Besides his devoted wife of 28 years he leaves one son, John of Jacksonville, VT, a daughter Marilyn of New York state, one granddaughter, Caitlin of Maine and his beloved cat, "Callie." Additionally he leaves his nephews, Murray (Chris), Matthew, Morgan, Mitchell and Mark Ellison, a niece Margery Leclaire and his nephew Fred Allen and wife Marie of Nevada. He was predeceased by a sister Betty Perry, two brothers, Robert "Robin" and Murray Ellison, a daughter Debbie Young, and a nephew Michael Ellison. FUNERAL SERVICES: Graveside services with full military honors will be conducted later in the springtime in East Clarendon (VT) Cemetery at a date and time to be announced by the funeral home.
