1934 - 2016 Richard "Oscar" Joseph Fecto of Vernon, VT, passed away peacefully on September 7, 2016, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH, at the age of 81 after a battle with lung cancer and, more recently, heart disease. Oscar was born in Brattleboro, VT, on December 10, 1934, to Elizabeth Fecto Tracy.He was raised by his mother and grandparents, Edward Joseph and Helena Elizabeth Lupine Fecto. He attended Hinsdale High School, where he played on the basketball team.He was in the U.S. Army from 1956 to May 1962 in Ft. Meade, MD, and in Germany protecting the border. During his time in Germany, he received many letters of commendation, a medal of good conduct, and was recognized formally as a "sharpshooter." He was a lifetime member of the VFW. On July 16, 1960, he married Donna Ruth Barnes and they had two children.He was employed by American Optical for 29 years until they closed in 1984.He coached his sons' baseball teams and was a Cub Scouts troop-leader.Some of his favorite pastimes were golfing, fishing, hunting, bird-watching, stonewall building, and woodworking. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 56 years, Donna Fecto of Vernon; two sons, Timothy Fecto and his wife Macy, and Todd Fecto and his wife Teresa; eight grandchildren, Logan and Morgan Fecto, Ethan and Ashton Fecto, Amanda, Nicholas and Jacob Sanner, and Heather Sanner Tvergyak; a brother, Clayton "Tony" Fecto; two sisters, Ramona Wilcox and Barbara Porter; as well as many nieces, nephews, and their children. Oscar is pre-deceased by his mother, Elizabeth Tracy; a sister, Helena Fecto; four brothers, Albert "Bucky" Ohlson, Robert Tracy, Milen "Bummy" Tracy, and Clarence "Peanut" Whittemore. SERVICES: There will be no Visitation. A Graveside Service will be held on Monday, September 12, 2016 at 11:00 AM at North Cemetery in Vernon, VT. The KER-WESTERLUND FUNERAL HOME, 57 High St., Brattleboro, VT is assisting the family with arrangements. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to either the Cardiovascular Group of Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center (https://dhmcalumdev.hitchcock.org/cardiovascular_fund)or the Oncology Unit at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital (https://www.bmhvt.org/giving/donate-online).
