1949 - 2015 HINSDALE, NH Richard Allen "Rick" Petrin, 65, of Revere Drive, passed away Friday, Feb. 6, 2015 at Cheshire Medical Center in Keene. He was born in Montague, MA on Sept. 20, 1949, and was the eldest son of Dominique and Ethel (Burnham) Petrin. He was raised and educated in Turners Falls and was a graduate of Turners Falls High School, Class of 1967. Richard proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War stationed in Germany. He was honorably discharged at the rank of Sargent. One year after returning home, he began his three year apprenticeship to become an optician. An optician for 43 years, he started his career at Schaff Opticians and recently retired after 18 years from Lane Eye Associates in Springfield, VT. Richard served as past President of the Opticians Association of Vermont and was a former member of the Hinsdale Lions Club. He was an avid golfer and also enjoyed travel, especially to the seacoast, the outdoors and driving his Miata. A soft spoken man, he endured a 12 year battle with cancer, never losing his sense of humor or kindness to others. On Jan. 16, 1971, at Gill Congregational Church, he was married to Cheryl A. Mayrand who survives. A loving husband and father, he leaves his wife of 44 years; his two children, Melissa Petrin Reynolds and her husband of Pittsburgh, PA and Matthew Petrin and his partner of Albany, NY; a granddaughter, Hannah of Pittsburgh, PA; his mother, Ethel; a brother, Barry Petrin; and two sisters, Jane Oakes and Mary Beth Morin. FUNERAL NOTICE: A Celebration of Richard's Life will be held at the American Legion in Brattleboro on Saturday, Feb. 14, 2015 from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm. Family and friends are invited to call at the Atamaniuk Funeral Home Friday evening, Feb. 13, 2015 from 6 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Richard's name may be made to the Brattleboro Memorial Hospital Oncology Dept., 17 Belmont Avenue, Brattleboro, VT 05301 or to the Farnum Rehabilitation Center Fund at Cheshire Medical Center, 580 Court Street, Keene, NH 03431.
