Robert B. Barden Jan. 14, 1931 - Jan. 16, 2009 KEENE, N.H. Robert B. Barden 77, of Maple Avenue, died Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2009, at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, Lebanon, following a brief illness. Born in Winchester on Nov. 7, 1931, the son of Thomas and Mary Feeney Barden, he grew up in Winchester, attending local schools, and was a 1949 graduate of Thayer High School. Mr. Barden served for 4½years in the Army during the Korean War. He was a member of the VFW Post 799 of Keene. He worked for 40 years with the Book Press of Brattleboro, Vt., 27 of those years as supervisor, retiring in 1992. From 1953 until 1955, he was under contract as a pitcher with the Milwaukee Braves. In 1957, he played fast-pitch softball all over New England, starting with the Monadnock Blocks, playing for over 25 years. Mr. Barden was the founding member of the Keene Mens Senior Softball League, playing and coaching from 1984-1997. He was the original inductee of the Greater Keene Softball League's Ball of Fame. He was the assistant softball coach with the Keene High School girls' softball team and assistant coach of the Keene Crickets AAU girls' softball team. He was a huge supporter of the Allyson Barden Softball League. Mr. Barden worked with MADD as a speaker. He was a communicant of St. Bernard Church. He was a huge Red Sox Fan, and in later years, was an avid golfer, playing at Bretwood Golf Course. He was considered a great friend and mentor to many. He leaves three daughters, Patricia Barden of Takoma Park, Md., Roberta Schermerhorn and her husband, Michael, of Schenectady, N.Y., and Robyn Chickering and her husband, Winford, of Hillsborough; his companion, Eileen Griffin of Keene; five grandchildren, Jared Ellott of California, Matthew Adams of Keene, Michael Schermerhorn of Schenectady, Samantha Chickering and Dustin Chickering, both of Hillsborough, and a great-granddaughter, Nora Grace Adams; his first wife, Erika Coughlin of Latham, N.Y.; a sister-in-law, Blondena Barden of Winchester; a mother-in-law, Clara Perry of Vernon, Vt.; a brother-in-law, George Perry of Newfane, Vt.; a niece, Patricia Collier of Keene, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his second wife, Alice Perry Barden, whom he married May 29, 1960, in 1998; by two daughters, Allyson Barden, who died in 1991 and Donna Barden, who died in 1995, and by two brothers, Raymond Barden and Francis Barden. FUNERAL NOTICE: A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, Jan. 19, 2009, at 10:30 a.m. in St. Bernard Church, 185 Main Street. Burial in St. Joseph Cemetery will be in the spring. Family and friends are invited to call Sunday from 3 to 6 p.m. at the FOLEY FUNERAL HOME, 49 Court Street, Keene.
