1921 - 2016 CHESTERFIELD- Roland "Ronnie" Joseph Desmarais, age 95, of Chesterfield died peacefully on Saturday evening, May 28, 2016 at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Roland was born in Holyoke, MA on February 15, 1921 and was one of five children of the late Aime D. Desmarais and Eva R. (Pouliot) Desmarais. He was raised and educated in Holyoke until he moved to New York entering the work force working as a plumbers assistant, before enlisting in the United States Army. He was a World War II Army Veteran and proudly served his country with the Headquarters Company 2 nd Battalion 502nd Parachute Infantry from April 1942 December 31, 1945. Roland served in the Ardennes, Central Europe, Rhineland, receiving the American Service Medal, Distinguished Unit Badge, European-African- Middle Eastern Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Medal and the Bronze Star Medal, before returning home and reentering the work force. He was married on June 15, 1946 in Haydenville at the Saint Mary's Church to the love of his life, Marguerite C. (LaPointe) and together they celebrated seventy years of marriage. They lived in Chesterfield for over seventy years. He worked for many years at Coca Cola and Pepsi Cola as deliveryman, in his later years he worked for many years at the former Landry Furniture Store in Easthampton before his retirement. He was known for being a "Jack of all Trades" always working on a project either in carpentry, plumbing, machine repairs or tending to his gardens that he loved so much. Roland also enjoyed fishing and was a member of the Northampton Lodge of Elks and Chesterfield Grange. He was born a New York Yankee's fan!! But he became an avid Boston Red Sox fan!!!! Roland is survived by his entire loving family, his wife Marguerite C. (LaPointe) Desmarais, one son; Joesph R. Desmarais of Chesterfield, two daughters; Doreen Karparis and her husband Bill of South Deerfield, Lynne Desmarais of Vernon, VT, six adored grandchildren; Colleen, Jeremy, Karin, Nickolas, Adam, Brittany, four adored great grandchildren; Asia, Jameson, Rylan, Cole, one brother; Rene Desmarais and his wife Beverly of Holyoke, one sister; Florence Brisbois of Hatfield, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by one brother, Charles Desmarais and one sister, Rita Vollmar. FUNERAL NOTICE: A Service and Burial for Roland with Military Honors will be held on Tuesday June 7, 2016 at 10am at the MA. Veteran's Memorial Cemetery, 1390 Main Street, Agawam. There are no calling hours. The GRAHAM FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION SERVICES 18 Adams Street in Easthampton has honorably been entrusted with providing for Roland's care and services.
