1930 - 2016 BRATTLEBORO - Stephen Edward Baker, 86, of Macintosh Lane died peacefully at his home early Saturday evening, July 2, 2016. Mr. Baker was born in Brattleboro, VT on May 15, 1930, the son of James F. Baker and Beatrice (Massey) Baker. He was raised in Brattleboro and went to Saint Michael's Grade School before moving to Dummerston. He then attended The Choate School in Wallingford, CT where he graduated from high school in 1948. Stephen then attended Middlebury College where he received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1952. After college, Stephen served in the United States Marine Corps from 1952-1954. He was stationed in Japan during the end of the Korean War and was discharged with the rank of Captain. Stephen returned to Vermont and joined the family business, Baker's Inc. in 1956. As CEO, he guided the company's growth and expansion in retail, wholesale and contract furniture businesses over the course of his six decade long career. On January 29, 1956, at Saint Bernard's Catholic Church in Fitchburg, MA, he was married to Jane Murdoch. She passed away in July 2011 after 55 years of loving marriage. He participated in many community activities over the years in Brattleboro. Some of the highlights include; Brattleboro Development Credit Corp., Brattleboro Retreat, Brattleboro Historical Society, Association for Downtown Development, Preservation Trust of Vermont, Experiment in International Living, Bank North Group, to name a few. Of his leisure time activities, he was an avid local historian and enjoyed skiing, snorkeling, walking, golf, Vexillology (study of flags) and Conchology (study of seashells). Stephen leaves three sons, James F. Baker II of Dummerston, Jonathan S. Baker of Encino, CA and Stephen E. Baker Jr. of Oakland, CA; one brother, Dennis J. Baker of Dummerston, five grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded by his wife Jane Murdoch Baker in 2011, brother Dudley M. Baker, M.D. in 2015 and daughter-in- law, Janet Lee Christy in 1997. FUNERAL NOTICE: The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, July 9, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at Saint Michael's Catholic Church. Celebrating the Mass will be the Rev. William Sheehan, OMI, former pastor of Saint Michael's Church. Committal Rites and burial will follow the Mass in the Baker plot in Saint Michael's parish Cemetery. A reception will follow at the Brattleboro Country Club at 12:30 p.m. Friends are invited to call on Friday, July 8, 2016 at 5:00-8:00 p.m. at Atamaniuk Funeral Home, 40 Terrace Street, Brattleboro.
