1926 - 2015 VERNON - Victoria "Vicki" Russell, 88, formerly of Saxton's River, VT, passed away peacefully early Sunday morning, March 1, 2015 at Vernon Green Nursing Home where she had been a resident since July of 2012. Victoria Russell was born in Jamaica, NY on July 9, 1926, the daughter of Boleslaw and Adela (Holownia) Jemielita. She was raised and educated in New York, attending the Girls Commercial High School, completing the Technical Course in Art. She met the love of her life, John E. Russell from London, England at age 17 at a USO dance in NYC. They married on January 21, 1945 at St. Thomas Church, Brooklyn, NY. Vicky then graduated from the Camberwell School of Art in London, England. For several years she worked as a textile designer for the Schumaker Company in New York City. Vicky was a faithful and devoted wife and loving mother and grandmother whose life centered around her family. Vicky was a dedicated supporter of the artistic endeavors of her children and grandchildren. Vicky was a wonderful artist in her own right. As a painter, she captured not only the dunes of Block Island, but many everyday scenes. As a weaver, she created countless rugs, wall hangings and upholstery covers. She was a wonderful cook, bringing home the traditions of her and her husband's heritage (Lithuanian and English) and, on top of it all, she played piano and filled her home with music. Vicky was a spiritual and faithful person and was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Stamford, CT where she was a former resident. Vicky and John had two sons, Stephen Russell and his wife, Carole of Rockingham, VT and Christopher Russell and wife, Michelle of Bedford, N.H.; two daughters, Margaret "Meg" Russell of Trumbull, CT and Karen Louise Russell Yorke who battled and succumbed to cancer in 1993. She had eight grandchildren, Christine Yorke, Matthew Russell, Leigh Leite (Yorke) and her husband, Victor Leite, Jonathan Russell and his wife, Aminata Dabo, Stephanie Russell, Christopher Russell, Jr., Brian Russell, and Mae Russell. She was predeceased by her three brothers, Matthew, Zygmundt and Julian Jemielita, and one sister, Helen Barrett. Her beloved husband of almost 70 years predeceased her on October 1, 2013. FUNERAL NOTICE: A Mass of the Eucharist will be celebrated Saturday at 11 A.M. at Saint Michael's Episcopal Church, 16 Bradley Avenue, Brattleboro, VT. Committal Rites and burial in Morningside Cemetery will take place in the springtime when the cemetery reopens. Mrs. Russell's family wishes to convey their heartfelt appreciation to the staff and management at Vernon Green Nursing Home for their love and wonderful care of both John and Vicky Russell.
