Winifred Gardner Bissell "Winnie" 1921-2010 SAXTONS RIVER - Winifred "Winnie" Gardner Bissell, 89, died Thursday night, December 9, 2010 at McGirr Nursing Home, Bellows Falls, Vt. She was born May 24, 1921 in Springfield, Vt., the only child of Earl and Mabel Rhoades Gardner. She was named Vermont's Typical Little Girl at the age of 12. Winnie graduated in the class of 1939 from Springfield High School where she was active thereafter in her reunion class acting as chairman and co-chair a number of years. She graduated from Concord Business College in 1941 and thereafter went to work for the Engineering Dept. of Fellows Gear Shaper. In 1945 she married Howard K. Bissell in the "Little church around the corner" in New York City and celebrated 40 years of marriage before he died in 1986. They made their home in Saxtons River where they became members of Christ Church. Winnie was active in Mother's Club, Women's Fellowship and sang in the choir. She was Cub Scout den mother. She was artistic and enjoyed painting. In later years she enjoyed Nature Club and Friendship Bible coffees and also worked for a number of years at the Rockdale Stores. Winnie was the proud and loving mother of three children, Douglas and his wife Bette of Bennington, Sylvia Liset and her husband George of Dover, N.H., and Dean Bissell of Bellows Falls. She so enjoyed her grandchildren, Becky Bissell of Jamaica, Jocelyn, Reed, and Bacall Liset of Dover, N.H. and Tegan Bissell of Burlington, Tori Bissell of Bellows Falls. Winnie is also survived by a dear sister in law Mary Bissell Van Wyck of Forth Worth, Texas along with loving cousins, nieces and nephews. FUNERAL NOTICE: There will be calling hours Monday, December 13, 2010 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the FENTON & HENNESSEY FUNERAL HOME, Bellows Falls, Vt. and viewing at Christ Church on Tuesday December 14, 2010 from 1 to 2 p.m. A funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. Burial will follow the service in the Saxtons River Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions gratefully received by McGirr Nursing Home Resident Activity Fund, Attn: Margaret Perry or Verna, 33 Atkionson Street, Bellows Falls, VT 05101
