Richard Bernier, Sr.

1938-2012 BRATTLEBORO Richard A. "Dick" Bernier, Sr. 74 of Bonnyvale Road died unexpectedly Sunday afternoon, December 2, 2012 in the emergency department at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital after being stricken ill at home.

Mr. Bernier was born in Athol, Mass on January 19, 1938 the son of Joseph and Laura (Thomas) Bernier. He was raised and educated in Westminster, Vt., where he attended the Kurn Hattin School. He went on to proudly serve his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict before being honorably discharged from active service.

He had been employed at the former BookPress in Brattleboro where he retired from in 1996 following 32 dedicated years with the company. Previously he worked for Cersosimo Lumber and Basketville. During his earlier years he worked on the Miller Farm in Vernon where he obtained the distinction of being a certified herdsman.

Mr. Bernier was also an accomplished builder, gunsmith and "jack of all trades." He enjoyed hunting, fishing and time shared with his family, especially his grandchildren.

He was first married to Yvonne Fisher and later was married to Sandra Batchelder in Dummerston on May 24, 1980.

Besides his loving and devoted wife of 32 years he leaves four daughters, Deborah Bernier Sontag and Mary-Rebecca Bernier both of Brattleboro, Gillian Chartier of S. Hadley, Mass., and Tammy Raymond of Vernon, two sons, Colin Boisvert of Chicopee, Mass., and Richard Bernier, Jr. of Brattleboro.

Additionally he is survived by one brother William Bernier, a sister, Virginia Styles, a half-brother Steven Styles, 12 grandchildren, two great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his beloved granddaughter Amber Marie Bernier and seven siblings.

FUNERAL NOTICE: Friends are invited to call at the Atamaniuk Funeral Home on Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. There are no formal funeral services scheduled.
