Catarina Fernandez Castañón

Catarina Fernandez Castañón, 86, passed away at her residence in Brownsville, Texas after a prolonged battle with cancer on Monday, Oct. 22, 2012. She was born in Brownsville, Texas on March 7, 1926.

When Cata was young she worked at Woolworth's at downtown Brownsville. She worked there for many years and made many friends. She loved to go to dances as a teenager. She later moved to East Chicago where she raised her four joys of her life. She was a great mother and housewife. As an adult here in Brownsville she was an avid church member and attended church on a regular basis. She made many friends at her church who were very important to her. She had the biggest heart and gave all of herself to those she loved and those in need.

In addition to the church she loved, Cata enjoyed making new friends and helping others. She was especially fond of small children. Her greatest fulfillment, however, was achieved as a wife, mother, and grandmother to the grandchildren she treasured so dearly. She was a wonderful mother, wife, sister, grandmother, aunt and friend to all that knew her.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 50 years, Roberto Castañón Castañón; her loving son, Arturo Castañón; her parents, Simon Fernandez and Rosa Flores Fernandez; her sister Aurora Medina; her brothers, Emilio Fernandez and Simon Fernandez Jr.

She is survived by her sons, Victor M. Castañón, Roberto (Leslie) Castañón Jr., Hector (Alexandra) Castañón; her grandchildren, Victor Castañón Jr., Leslie Jenice Castañón, Christopher Ian Castañón, Robin Candice Castañón, Jordan Allison Castañón, Robert Nicholas Castañón, Jasmin Carina Castañón, Victoria Alexis Castañón, Joe Izaack Castañón, Arturo Castañón Jr. and Catarina Julia Castañón; her siblings, Raul Fernandez, Beatriz F. (Ramon) Cantu, Maria "Mary" F. (Ramon) Garcia, Evangelina F. Reyna (Leonel+) and various nieces and nephews.

Catarina will be greatly missed by her family and friends and will remain forever in our hearts. We feel that we were very blessed to have had her with us for 86 wonderful years.
