IRMA CONTRERAS

Irma Contreras, 1941 - 2013, passed away at age 71, in her home in Citrus Heights with family present. She bravely fought pancreatic cancer for over a year.

Irma was born and raised in Brownsville, Texas, where she met and married Pablo Contreras on Feb. 22, 1959. They moved to Sacramento, Calif., in 1963.

She is survived by her husband, Pablo; two daughters, Mary Alice Baynard of Auburn, Calif., and Corinne E. Bartley of Citrus Heights, Calif., and two grandchildren, Colin and Cleo Bartley.

Her son, Paul David Contreras, and her sister, Teresa Portugal, preceded her in death.

She is also survived by her brothers, Reyes Rodriguez of Texas and Robert Rodriguez of Arizona.

Irma graduated from CSUS with a BA and MA in English and education. She taught at Kennedy High School for 15 years. She was very passionate about teaching and very dedicated to her students. She was also the adviser for the Mecha club at Kennedy HS. Irma also enjoyed nature, history and travel. She had traveled in Europe and South America. Irma spoke fluent Spanish and used her skills to help others.

A memorial service was held at First Church of God in Sacramento on Feb. 11, 2013. Irma and Pablo attended First Church of God for many years.

Irma will be remembered for her generosity, faith and strength.

The family would like any remembrances to be contributions in her name to cancer research.
