Hortencia (Hinojosa) Sloss Obituary
HORTENCIA HINOJOSA SLOSS
Hortencia Hinojosa Sloss, 90, our beloved sister, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, aunt, and friend entered into the glory of her eternal life on Saturday, Jan. 04, 2014, at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Brownsville, Texas surrounded by her loving family.
Tencha, as she was affectionately known to all, was born in San Benito but had been a resident of Brownsville for numerous years. Tencha was a staple and familiar face to all those involved in the "arts" here in our community. She had been a volunteer at the Brownsville Art League for over 50 years and was currently the Administrative Director of the Brownsville Museum of Fine Arts. Tencha's passion in life was all forms of art and art expression.
Tencha was also a staunch Democrat and was quite active in local politics. Tencha was also a volunteer at both Clearwater and Ortiz Elementary Schools for over a decade as a "CARE" partner. In her younger years, Tencha worked as a reporter for the Brownsville Herald.
Tencha was the pillar of her family. She was the one who kept them all united and together. Tencha was a strong willed woman who taught those around her to be strong and to never give up. Even up to the end she was in control.
Tencha was deeply loved and will be profoundly missed not only by her family and friends but by all those fortunate to have known her.
Tencha was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse W. Sloss Sr.; her daughter, Roberta Joy "Bobbie" Saldivar; a step-son, Jesse W. Sloss Jr.; her parents, Natalia P. and Cresencio V. Hinojosa; a sister, Ruby Neece; and three brothers, Cresencio Jr., Enrique, and Carlos Hinojosa.
Left behind to eternally treasure their memories of her are the four granddaughters that were her pride and joy, Rebecca J. "Becky" (Jorge) Robles, Roberta "Bobbie" A. (Stephen) Alvarez, Roxana "Roxie" M. Betancourt, and R. Michele Saldivar; ten great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. Tencha will also be missed by her two sisters, Dolores (Clyde) Witte and Elena (Henry+) Vergott and her four brothers, Daniel (Gloria), Raul, Richard (Barbara+), and Amador Hinojosa; and five step-daughters, Mary Elsie Ireland, Sylvia Schroeder, Rose Marie de los Santos, Rose Lee Dorsey, and Bonnie Rigelsky and numerous nieces, nephews, and other extended family members.
Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2014 and continue through 9:00 p.m. with the recitation of the holy rosary scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Tuesday evening at Darling-Mouser Funeral Home. The Funeral Mass will be at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2014 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 1914 Barnard Road. Committal services will follow at Buena Vista Burial Park.
Stephen Alvarez Jr., Esteban Alvarez III, Rhyen Betancourt, Rudy Marks III, Ben R. Neece, and Jorge Robles are honored to be serving as Tencha's pallbearers. Gustavo Saldivar, Chris and Mike Hinojosa, Duane Neece, and Robert Vergott will serve as honorary pallbearers.
In lieu of flowers, Tencha's family asks that you please consider a memorial gift in her name to her beloved Brownsville Museum of Fine Arts, Attn: Dee Ramirez, 660 E. Ringgold Street, Brownsville, Texas 78520, (956) 542-0941.
