Antonio Torres Obituary
Antonio A. "Tony" Torres, Sr., 68, our beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, father-in-law, brother-in-law, uncle, boss, and friend entered into the glory of his eternal life suddenly and unexpectedly on Thursday, April 21, 2011 at his residence.
Born on 07 December 1942, Tony, as he was affectionately known to all, was a lifetime resident of Brownsville. Judge Torres had humble beginnings in the workforce, starting as a meat cutter at Lopez Wholesale Meats. He held various other jobs before becoming a police officer with the City of Brownsville, and later serving as a probation officer for Cameron County.
Always with an interest in serving our community, Tony decided to run for Justice of the Peace in 1984. He served as a Justice of the Peace for 23 years; with never a complaint over the odd hours of the position, but rather with a sincere heart and great desire for helping those in need.
Tony also served in various community and church organizations including: St. Mary's Men's Club and the Knights of Columbus. Tony and his wife Lillian were instrumental in the founding of the Little Miss Kickball of East Brownsville, an organization that was especially dear to him. The hours that Tony served the League are countless as he held various board positions.
He loved spending time with his family and was a man of great love and respect for Church, God, and his Community. He enjoyed watching sports, always rooting for his favorite Texas teams: The Cowboys, the Astros, and the Spurs. The Judge was deeply loved he will likewise be greatly missed by all those whose lives he touched. May you rest in peace, Dad.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Simon and Leonor Torres; a sister, Rebecca Gonzalez; and a brother, Guadalupe Torres.
Left behind to eternally treasure their memories of him is his wife, of 50 years, Lillian S. Torres; his children: Antonio Alfonso (Susie) Torres Jr., Yvonne (Ricardo) Jauregui, Debbie (Daniel Reyes) Torres, Lorraine (Damian) Orozco, and Aida (Rafael) Garcia; and 12 grandchildren with one that is on the way. He will also be missed by his brothers and sisters: Andres S. (Lydia) Torres, Modesta (Clarence+) Weatherford, Andrea Ramirez, Ramon A. Torres, Ricardo Torres, Jesus (Darlene) Torres; his two brothers-in-law, Larry (Hortencia) Solis and Homer (Janie) Solis; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other extended family members.
Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. and continue through 9 p.m. at the Brownsville Events Center, 1 Events Center Blvd. on Monday, April 25, 2011 with the recitation of the holy rosary at 7 p.m. Monday evening at the Events Center. The Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, April 26, 2011 at the Brownsville Events Center. Interment will follow at Rose Lawn Memorial Gardens.
The Judge's grandsons: Justin Garcia, Gabriel, Michael, and Ricky Jauregui, and David and Derick Torres are honored to be serving as pallbearers for their grandfather. Pablo Gonzalez, George Lopez, Omar Lucio, Joe G. Rivera, Carlos "Shorty" Rodriguez, Larry Solis, and his office staff will serve as honorary pallbearers. The Brownsville Police Department Funeral Honor Guard will be rendering a Policeman's Salute at the graveside.
