Irene Hoverson, 89, of Mercedes, passed away peacefully Nov. 8, 2012, in Winnie, Texas, with her loving daughter-in-law, Mitzi, by her side.

Irene was born May 25, 1923, to Albert and Edna Schwarz. She graduated from Mercedes High School and married Phillip Marshall Hoverson on June 20, 1942. Through the years Irene raised five children and began a career as a schoolteacher. She received her bachelor degree from Pan American University in 1969 and taught for over 30 years in the Santa Maria and Progreso school districts before retiring. Irene loved children and even though her mind may have failed her, the sight of a small child always brought a smile to her face. We will always remember her beautiful soprano voice that entertained her family, church members and companions at the nursing home.

Irene was preceded in death by her husband, Phillip; her parents, Albert and Edna Schwarz; her brothers, William, Leonard and Marvin; her sisters, Miriam, Dorthea, and Marjorie, and granddaughter, Andrea Irene Butler.

She is survived by sons, Marshall and wife, Jeanette, Clint and wife, Mitzi; daughters, Cynthia Wells, and husband Larry, Janice Fossler, and Teresa Mostafavi and husband, Massoud; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home chapel on Monday, Nov. 12, from 1 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. Funeral procession will depart from the funeral home at 2:45 p.m. for a church service at 3 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Mercedes. Interment will follow at Ebony Grove Cemetery. A reception for all friends and family will be held at the church following interment.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the care of García & Treviño Funeral Home of Mercedes.
