A. Wayne Hartzog, age 80, passed away on July 4, 2013. Wayne was born on March 19, 1933, to Arthur Purvis (Mike) Hartzog and Mary Ruth Grantham Hartzog. He attended Rio Hondo High School from 1948-1951. He graduated from Texas A&I University in Kingsville with a degree in accounting in 1954. He enlisted in the Army and served in the Korean War as a first lieutenant in the 38th Parallel Listening Post.

Wayne married Beverly Jane Johnson on Dec. 6, 1959. In 2012, they celebrated 53 years of marriage. He will always be remembered for his devotion to and love for his family. His warm heart and infectious laugh made those around him smile. Wayne was an expert at making people feel cared for and important. In 1964, he began a long career in the grocery store business. Along with his brothers, Jerry and Tim, they ran stores in Lockhart, Luling, Comfort, Brownsville, Los Fresnos, and La Feria. Not long after retiring in 1999, he and Beverly moved closer to their son, Reed's family in Odem, Texas, where they enjoyed watching their grandchildren grow.

Wayne was a loving son, brother, father, uncle, grandfather, and friend. Wayne is preceded in death by his father, Arthur Purvis (Mike) Hartzog; his mother, Mary Ruth Grantham Hartzog; and his sister, Dorothy Gwen Hartzog.

Wayne is survived by his devoted and loving wife, Beverly Johnson Hartzog; son, Reed Hartzog, and his wife, Blake Elliott Hartzog; his daughter, Holly Hartzog Van Herpe, and her husband, Todd Van Herpe; his grandchildren, Hayley Hartzog, Brady Hartzog, Greta Van Herpe, and Davis Van Herpe; siblings, Barbara Hartzog, Linda (Larry) Sandell, Tim (Lois) Hartzog, and Jerry (Jan) Hartzog; as well as several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

Thank you to the Holmgren Staff at Trinity Towers in Corpus Christi for taking exceptional care of Wayne when he needed it most. A special thank you goes out to Hospice Nurse Alma Sanchez for being Wayne's guardian angel in his last months.
