Henry Robert "Bob" Sales, 75, passed away Dec. 1, 2013, at Valley Baptist Medical Center-Harlingen.|
Bob was born Aug. 21, 1938, in Corpus Christi, Texas, to Ernest & Leota Sales.
He moved to Raymondville, Texas, early in his childhood and excelled in all sports at Raymondville High School, particularly basketball. After receiving All-State recognition his senior year in 1956, he accepted a scholarship from future-Hall-of-Fame coach Guy Lewis to play Division-1 basketball at the University of Houston. After transferring to Texas A&I University in Kingsville, he graduated with a degree in business administration in 1960 and after serving in the ROTC program was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army. He served his country for two years and upon his honorable discharge went to work for the Texas State Board of Insurance on a fire rate crew, and later served as a Special Agent for Quirk & Company in San Antonio.
On April 15, 1968, Bob was asked to become the managing agent of the old Brown & Roberts Insurance Agency in Brownsville, Texas. He accepted that position and within a very short amount of time was the sole owner of the Bob Sales Insurance Agency for the next 34 years. Upon selling his agency to his two sons in 2002, Bob continued to head to the office nearly every day, dispensing valuable advice and good cheer to his sons, the office staff and his many long-time, faithful customers.
He married the former Janice Ellington, of Lyford, Texas, on Feb. 10, 1962.
He is survived by Jan after 51 years of marriage, along with their three children, Wade (Lisa), Blake (Natalie) and Shannon (Mike), along with his nine grandchildren and many other family members and friends who will miss him dearly.
