Craig Sr., Carlton Edward "Bud" - Yeagertown  
Carlton Edward "Bud" Craig Sr., 85, of Yeagertown, Pa., and formerly of Supply, died at 9:50 a.m., Friday, Dec. 4, 2014, at Ohesson Manor in Lewistown, Pa.. Born Jan. 10, 1929, in Altavista, Va., he was the son of the late Clarence W. Craig Sr. and Elnora (Eades) Craig. He is survived by his wife, Betty (Vogel) Craig whom he married in 1953; his children, Nancy (Craig) Tundel and her husband, Philip, of Yeagertown; Carlton E. "Skip" Craig Jr. and wife, Marsha, of Birmingham, Ala.; Stuart W. Craig and wife, Sylvia, of Clayton; Robert E. Craig and wife Brenda of Hudson, Ohio; 10 grandchildren to whom he was "Poppa" and two great-grandchildren; his sister, Shirley V. Robinson of Hickory; his brother, John M. Craig and wife, Virginia, of Holden Beach and a sister-in-law, Marilyn Craig of Hickory. He was preceded in death by a brother, Clarence W. Craig Jr. Bud was a veteran and staff sergeant in the U.S. Air Force, having served during the Korean Conflict. He was employed as head design draftsman for U.S. Steel and in the midst of working he still managed to raise cattle. He was a member of the Saint Luke Lutheran Church in Ocean Isle Beach, where he was a charter member and chair member of the building committee and he also attended the Holy Communion Lutheran Church in Yeagertown. He was a 33rd Degree Mason and he was a Shriner; and a member of the VFW in North Carolina. Bud enjoyed gardening and fishing; he loved participating in turtle watching with his grandchildren at the beach; his grandchildren were the center of his universe. A brief Celebration of Life will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 20, at the Ohesson Manor Chapel, 276 Green Ave., Lewistown. His family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. A Celebration of Life will also be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 27, at the Saint Luke Lutheran Church, 5869 Ocean Highway W, Ocean Isle Beach. Interment will be in Saint Luke Lutheran Cemetery. Memorial contributions in Bud's memory can be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 3544 N. Progress Ave., Harrisburg, PA 17110. Dawson, Mildred Virl - Shallotte  
Mildred Virl Dawson, 100, passed peacefully on Thursday, Nov. 27, 2014. Mildred was the daughter of the late Grover Cleveland McCoy and Clara Dugger McCoy. She is also preceded in death by her husband, Ruben Martin Dawson, grandson, Tab Carpenter, great-grandson, Charles Miller Jr., and great-great-grandson Jace Williford. Mrs. Dawson is survived by three daughters, Martha Proper of Michigan, Clara Carpenter of Georgia and Theresa Sago of Shallotte; and one son, Lynn Dawson of Florida; 12 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren; and 16 great-great-grandchildren. The family received friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7, at Chattanooga Funeral Home North. A memorial service was held Monday, Dec. 8, also at the funeral home. Burial followed at Chattanooga National Cemetery.

Edwards, Larry David - Davidson  
Larry David Edwards, 71, of Davidson and Holden Beach, passed away Monday, Dec. 15, 2014, at Grand Strand Hospital in Myrtle Beach, S.C., following a short illness. He was born June 1, 1943 to Wilbur and Edna Edwards of Fayetteville, N.C. Larry attended Fayetteville High School and graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he was on the golf team and a big basketball fan. Larry and his family started and have operated Turtle Creek Nursery outside of Davidson for more than 40 years. Many organizations have benefited from his leadership, including Southern Nursery Association (president 1993), North Carolina Nursery and Landscape Assoc. (President 1986) and Trustee of Holden Beach Chapel. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Huntersville and Holden Beach Interdenominational Chapel. Larry is preceded in death by his parents, Wilbur and Edna Edwards of Fayetteville and his brother, Joseph Edwards of Fayetteville. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Jane Webb Edwards; son, L. David Edwards Jr., his wife, Jennifer, and daughter, Mary Ann Edwards, all of Davidson. Larry loved his three granddaughters, Sydney, Ashley and Madison Edwards who all gave him great joy and happiness. He also leaves five sisters-in-law, Janice Webb Ayers (Bob), Dottie Webb Keever (Jim), Fran Webb White (Lathe), Jackie Webb Lewis (Cal) and Mary Webb Marsteller (Doug); brother-in-law, Jim Webb (Marge); and 18 nieces and nephews. Larry loved the beauty of nature and growing things. He shared this love and his beautiful plants with many individuals, churches and facilities throughout his life. He was happiest caring for his nursery, his yards and others' gardens that he blessed with his plants and care. He leaves much beauty for us to enjoy. A celebration of his life will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 17, at Holden Beach Chapel conducted by Dr. John Gray, preceded by visitation from 1 to 2 p.m. in the fellowship hall. A memorial service will also be held in Mooresville. A family burial will be in High Point. Hooker, Johanna Amelia - 3. Brunswick  
Johanna Amelia Hooker, 89, of Ocean Isle Beach, died Sunday, Dec. 14, 2014. She was born Feb. 9, 1925, in Staten Island, N.Y., a daughter of the late John and Mary DiVencenzi Mazza. She was an alumnus of New Dorp High School, a parishioner of St. Sylvester's Catholic Church. Prior to moving to Ocean Isle Beach, she retired from Doctor's Hospital, Staten Island, as a secretary to the Director of Nursing. Mrs. Hooker devoted her time in many areas as a volunteer including Union Elementary School, Shallotte Library, Museum of Coastal Carolina, Ocean Isle Beach Community Center, St. Brendan the Navigator Roman Catholic Church and New Hanover Regional Medical Center. The family requests in lieu of flowers, memorials be directed to one of these. She was also a member of the OIB Land Conservancy. Surviving are her husband of 67 years, Allen Hooker; two sons, Allen Hooker Jr. and wife, Maureen, of Lake Wylie, S.C., and John Hooker and wife, Donna, of Palm City, Fla.; two daughters, Mary Ellen Bonczek and husband, Joseph, of Wilmington, and Susan Tallents and husband, Dr. Brett Tallents, of Fulton, N.Y. Also surviving are 14 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 17, at St. Brendan the Navigator Roman Catholic Church. Inurnment will be private in the church Columbarium. Visitation was from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday evening at the funeral home. Kapalka, Pearl Veta (Marcoux)  
Pearl Veta Marcoux Kapalka, 85, of Calabash, died Sunday, Dec. 1, 2014, at her residence. Born in Central Falls, R.I., on July 1, 1929, she was a daughter of the late Alfred E. Marcoux Jr. and Alma Marcoux. Survivors include her children, Stella Arcaro of Calabash, John Kapalka III of Wareham, Mass., Helen Kapalka of Calabash and Wendy Audette Cowans of Orlando, Fla.; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 27, in the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witnesses, 105 Tower Road, Christiansburg, Va., with Brother Ralph N. Stewart officiating. McCall, Roy Leon - Shallotte  
Roy Leon McCall 66, of Shallotte, died Sunday, Dec. 14, 2014, at his residence. Leon was born March 20, 1948, the son of the late Johnnie Melvin and Thelma Kathleen McCall. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Johhnie McCall Jr., Douglas McCall, Eddie McCall and Wayne McCall; and one sister, Colene Hewett. He is survived by three sisters, Etta Mae Hale and husband, Ralph, Rhoda Bullock and husband, Buddy, Alice Hewett and husband, Lynnwod; and brother, Dwight McCall and wife, Faye. Known as the "Bottle Man," Leon was a face known by many. He never met a stranger and was a beloved neighbor and friend. His smiling face and warm heart will never be forgotten. His family wishes to express thanks to the many people who helped him along the way, with car rides and keeping him company in his travels. A special thanks to David Lee for being Leon's best friend and caregiver. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 17, at the Coble Ward-Smith Funeral Service Chapel in Supply. A visitation will begin at 1 p.m.

Quinlan, Mary T. - Williamsburg  
Mary T. Quinlan, 98, passed away Sunday, Dec. 9, 2014. She is survived by her son, Martin; and her daughters, Kathleen (Butch), Christine (Robert C.) and Victoria (Kenneth); as well as eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her husband, Martin; her son, Paul; and grandson, Jonathan. Born in New York City and raising her family on Long Island, Mary later moved with her husband to Carolina Shores, for their retirement. After enjoying more than two decades in that area, she moved to Williamsburg, Va., where she spent her final years at Chambrel Senior Living. Services will be held at a later date at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church in North Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Ratliff, William Frederick - Reidsville  
William Frederick Ratliff passed away peacefully Thursday, Dec. 11, 2014. Fred was the youngest child and only son of the late Vera Etta Wimbush Ratliff and Coy Cephus Ratliff. He was born on a farm in Leaksville on June 26, 1942, where his father traded the doctor a shoat for the house call. The family soon moved to a farm in Wentworth where Fred grew up and later built a home for his new family. Fred graduated from Wentworth School in Wentworth, in 1960 where he played baseball and basketball. He went on to play semi-pro baseball from 1960 to 1967. Shortly after his marriage on March 12, 1967, Fred made a profession of faith. He was a member of Baptist Temple Church where he served on various committees and was honored to be elected as and serve as a deacon. From 1963 to 1977, Fred worked in the elevator industry installing motorized fire doors and escalators. He was elected as the business representative for the International Union of Elevator Constructors in 1977 and was reelected until his retirement in 2002. He served on the National Labor Relations Committee and the Local Education Committee. During retirement, he and his wife enjoyed spending time on Oak Island where he was often seen on Ocean Crest Pier. He was preceded in death by his devoted wife of 41 years, Hilda Chatmon Ratliff. He is survived by his daughter, Gretchen Ratliff Parrish and son-in-law, Wayne, as well as his grandsons, Caleb William Parrish and Daniel Wayne Parrish. His grandsons gave him great joy and gave him strength and determination to live as he fought a courageous battle against cancer. He is also survived by his sisters, Evelyn Bankston, Onie Mullins and Russ Royal. He was preceded in death by his sister, Elaine Cross and his youngest daughter, Anna Christine Ratliff. Fred was also blessed to have many wonderful and special friends who shared his love for fishing, hunting, dancing, farming, cooking and telling stories from days gone by. The family gratefully acknowledges the love and support they have received from many church families, Advanced Home Health Care in Wentworth, The Annie Penn Cancer Center, The Penn Center and Hospice Home in Wentworth. Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 13, at Wilkerson Funeral Home with the Rev. John Groff officiating. Interment followed in Evergreen Memory Gardens. The family received friends Friday evening at the funeral home. Memorials may be made in Fred's memory to Hospice Home of Rockingham County, P.O. Box 281, Wentworth, NC 27375. Judie Lane Adams Somersett, 65, of North Myrtle Beach, S.C., formerly of the Grissettown community, Ocean Isle Beach, died Sunday, Dec. 14, 2014, in the SECU Hospice House of Brunswick. Born in Columbus County on Aug. 27, 1949, she was the daughter of the late Samuel and Pluma Hammond Adams. She was a retired office manager at A Place at the Beach. She was a member of Old Shallotte Baptist Church and recently First Baptist Church of North Myrtle Beach, S.C. Survivors include her daughter, Donna S. Gormley of Ocean Isle Beach; two sons, Michael Somersett and Kevin Somersett (Denise), both of Ocean Isle Beach; and five grandchildren, Jordan, Skylar, Austin, Logan and Noah. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 18, at the Brunswick Funeral Service chapel by the Rev. John Chase and Mrs. Irene Barfield. Entombment will follow in the Brunswick Memorial Gardens Community Mausoleum. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m., prior to the service at the funeral home. Born March 22, 1951, in Columbus County, she was the daughter of the late Ernest Smith and Vera Hughes Smith. She is survived by one son, Herbert Stanley of Ash; three daughters, Valarie Stanley of Ash, Judy Herring of Oak Island and Kimberly Stanley of Williamsburg, Va.; five brothers, Roger Smith of Holden Beach, Lennon Smith of Ash, Danny Smith of Ash, Charlie Smith of Ash and Monroe Smith of Ash; five sisters, Donia Miller of Wilmington, Lois Milliken of Ash, Debbie Norris of Ocean Isle, Elizabeth Phillips of Ash and Evelyn Carpenter of Supply; and two grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 18, at Solider Bay Church, Ash. Burial will follow in the Smith Cemetery, Longwood Road in Ash.
