Best, Lenard Dean - Ash  
Lenard Dean Best, 42, of Ash, died Monday, May 18, 2015, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington. He was the son of Robert Dean and Patricia Calhoun Best of Ash. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his friend and companion, Annie Smith of Lake Waccamaw, and brother, Beckett Best of Ash. A private family service will be held at a later date.

Crocker, Margie (Poteet) - Calabash  
Margie Poteet Crocker, 90, of Calabash, died Thursday, May 14, 2015, at Grand Strand Medical Center, Myrtle Beach, S.C. Born Dec. 12, 1924, in Pine Bluff, Ark., a daughter of the late Charles and Josephine Price Poteet. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Crocker on March 1, 2009. Mrs. Crocker was a charter member of the Calabash Volunteer Fire Department. Surviving are her two sons, Bob Crocker (Gloria), of Monroe, La., and David Crocker (Lucille), of Calabash; two daughters, Ann Patrick of Calabash and Peggy Kundrick (Don), of Greenburg, Pa.; eight grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted at 1 p.m. Monday, May 18, in the Brunswick Funeral Service chapel by the Revs. Tom Gore and Jason L. Benton. Burial followed in Brunswick Memorial Gardens. Visitation was Sunday evening, May 17, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the funeral home. The family requests in lieu of flowers, memorials be directed to River of Life Baptist Church of Sunset Beach, 8620 Ocean Highway W., Sunset Beach, NC 28468. Cudnick, Jesse - Supply  
Jesse Cudnick, 62, of Supply, died Saturday, May 9, 2015, at Novant Health Brunswick Medical Center. Jesse was born Dec. 31, 1952, in Philadelphia, son of the late Jesse and Virginia Cudnick. He is survived by his wife, Debra Cudnick; stepson, Charles A. Morgan III of Arizona; stepdaughter Heidi Masters of Dallas, N.C.; seven grandchildren; and sister, Judy Gropp of Wilmington, Del. A service to celebrate Jesse's life will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, May 23, at Oak Grove Baptist Church in Supply. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall following the service.

Evans, Derek L. "Durwood" - Ash  
Derek L. "Durwood" Evans, 47, of Ash, died Monday, May 18, 2015. Born in Brunswick County on Nov. 10, 1967, he was the son of Gurley L. and Glenda Cannon Evans. Surviving in addition to his parents are three daughters, Tifany Evans of Nakina, Shana Turberville of Chadbourn and Brooke Causey of Whiteville; two sisters, Betty Carlyle and Delores Evans, both of Ash; and five grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 21, in New Britton Baptist Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Forsey, Roslyn "Roz" - Shallotte  
After an extended illness, Roslyn "Roz" Forsey died at SECU Hospice House of Brunswick in Bolivia, Monday, May 11, 2015. She was born June 8, 1945. Roz, 69, was the beloved wife of the late F. Keith Forsey and daughter of the late Roswell and Susan (Passmore) Lago of Calabash. She is survived by her brothers, Daniel (Cindee) Lago, Greg (Karen) Lago and Brian Lago; son, Tyler Sears; and stepsons, Jeffery (Lianne) Forsey and Greg (Michelle) Forsey. Grandchildren include Jayson, Derick and Hunter Sears, Madison, Jackson, Jason and Christopher Forsey. Roz graduated from Royalton-Hartland Central School in Middleport, N.Y., in 1963. She received her bachelor's degree in teaching from SUNY-Brockport in 1967. The same year she started teaching at Newfane Central School, grade four, with a specialization in math. She went on to receive a master's degree from SUNY-Buffalo. During her tenure with the Newfane Central School District, Roz held several positions with the Newfane Teachers Association, including many years as secretary. With her leadership skills, Roz also helped to coordinate the teachers' strike in 1975. Roz and Keith retired to Shallotte in 1993. She worked for several years at Marsh Lighting and also with Keith in their business, Closet Concepts. They were a team personally and professionally. Roz also served as secretary for the Saint Brendan the Navigator Parish Council for many years, in addition to serving as Eucharistic minister and lector. Roz had a very special way of touching people with her kindness and giving of herself. She will be missed by many people. Mass will be offered at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 19, at St. Brendan the Navigator Roman Catholic Church, 5101 Ocean Highway W., followed by inurnment in the church columbarium. Griffith, Janet L. - Southport  
Janet L. Griffith, 77, of Southport, died Sunday, May 10, 2015, at Autumn Care, The Palms, in Shallotte. Born July 30, 1937, Janet was the eldest child of the late Oscar C. and Lola Clark Hamilton of Pike County, Ky. Janet is survived by her husband, James Griffith of Southport; two daughters, Sherri Junglen and Rebecca Lentini; two grandchildren; two great-grandsons; five sisters, Donna Denando, Linda Robinson, Wanda Ball, Saundra Philyaw and Karen Albright; and two brothers, Tom Hamilton and Ron Hamilton. Funeral services were conducted Thursday afternoon, May 14, at Brunswick Funeral Services chapel with the Rev. Eddie Hill officiating. Hales, Lee Vernon - Candor  
Lee Vernon Hales, 68, of Candor, died Sunday, May 17, 2015, at his residence. Mr. Hales was born in Lee County to Frank and Mary Lee Criscoe Hales. Surviving are his wife, Lois Ross Hales of the home; son, Chad McLeod of Supply; daughter, Shonda Greene of Supply; brother, Ed Hales of Carthage; sister, Frances Bib of Carthage; and seven grandchildren, A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Herrick, John F. "Jack" - Shallotte  
John F. "Jack" Herrick, 82, of Shallotte, died Friday, May 8, 2015, in the SECU Hospice House of Brunswick in Bolivia. Jack was born in Albion, Mich., on June 8, 1932, the son of the late Norman F. and Ruth E. Laughlin Herrick. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a son, Anthony Richard Herrick; sisters, Rosemary Vinson, Nancy Lee Maddox, Joan Dianne Shank, Susanne Marie Klein and Sondra Jo Goetz. He is survived by a son, Christopher John Herrick (Roberta), of Yankton, S.D.; daughters, Katherine Jo Reich (Chuck), of Madison, Wis., Amy Grace Venlos (Russ), of Wyoming, Mich.; four grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and 34 nieces and nephews. Jack was married to Linda Potter Herrick of the home for 37 years. They have lived in Brunswick County for 15 years. Jack is a graduate of Western Michigan in Kalamazoo, Mich., with a degree in industrial engineering. During his working years he traveled to North Carolina many times for work and loved the area. He and Linda vacationed in Sunset Beach every year for 19 years before moving here in 2000. He spent many of his first years "drowning worms" (as his wife said) off the Sunset Beach Pier and enjoyed the comaraderie of all of the locals and transplants he met. These jaunts were curtailed a bit after suffering an injury to his back during a boating accident on the Intracoastal Waterway. Both he and Linda were very active at Saint Luke Lutheran Church since joining one month after moving here. He served as a member of the Lutheran Men of Mission Group, lawn mower, teller, and cook's helper at the many church picnics and affairs. He is an active member of the American Legion, B.P.O. Elks, and was a U.S. Army National Guard veteran. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in his name to Lower Cape Fear Hospice & LifeCareCenter for the SECU Hospice House of Brunswick, 1414 Physicians Drive, Wilmington, NC 28401. Memorial services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 13, at Saint Luke Lutheran Church with Pastor Henry Rehder officiating. Inurnment will follow in the church columbarium. Hewett, Wilber Gerson - Shallotte  
Wilber Gerson Hewett, 67, of Shallotte died Tuesday, May 12, 2015. Born in Brunswick County on Dec. 17, 1947, he was a son of the late Wilber Cross and Mable Ann Simmons Hewett. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Charles E. Arnsdorff. He was an Army veteran. Surviving are his wife, Rosalind "Roz" Taylor Hewett; son, Tony Allen Arnsdorff of Guyton, Ga.; daughter, Terry Ann Hair of Supply; brother, Steve Hewett of Wilson; sisters, Marguerite Carr of Winston-Salem, Priscilla Andrews of Sunset Beach and Dean Carroll of Shallotte; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 4 p.m. Thursday, May 14, in Brunswick Funeral Service Chapel. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services at the funeral home.
